We got Rocco Baldelli from my current hometown and I used to live in Providence where Paul Konerko is from. I have no ties to either besides that.

Xavier Nady is from my hometown (not the town I live in now), that's why I collect him.

My brother lives in Hoboken, NJ, the ultimate birthplace, because it's where the first organized game of baseball was played.

I grew up in Anoka, MN and the only major leaguer was Bob Fenwick.

In 1963, he led the Anoka Tornadoes to the Minnesota State Tournament where they faced the Springfield Tigers led by future major leaguer Mike Davison (see my earlier post) and my father among others. The heavily favored Tornadoes were sent home as they were shutout by the small town Tigers and Davison 6-0. It shouldn't have been a big surprise as the Springfield Tigers were something of a juggernaut as they had also been in the State Tournament the previous six years.

Fenwick was drafted but went to the University of Minnesota instead and then on to a short major league career as a utility infielder. Interestingly, he was the second Japanese born player in the major leagues, five years after Mike Lum.

Ironically, after his career ended, he ended up in Anoka and met my father. His boys were the same age as my brother and I, so the families would get together frequently, the parents playing bridge upstairs while the kids roughhoused in the basement. We grew up playing a lot of baseball with the Fenwicks.

Here's a link to a SABR article oh him:

Todd Walker graduated from the same high school as I did. I never met him, but his mom was one of the counselors.
