Sox have 3 in the top 50, but also 2 of the next 7 I believe, for a total of 5 in the first 57. Look for them to take at least 1 or 2 high risk guys. Im really excited for this draft as a bunch of Canes should be available between picks 20-57, including one the sox drafted a few years ago

Unlike Strasburg, Harper is by no means a lock to go #1.

Also worth noting is the Blue Jays get four picks in the top 50.

After how badly they botched last year's draft, you Canucks better hope they get their picks signed this time around.

Braden & Pigskincardboard -- got any insight on this to share?

I actually would think they won't take Harper at number 1 unless he just flat out dominates competition this season. Having only 1 pick in the top 50, I would expect them to go the collegiate route with more of a seasoned guy, with less risk. But if they see Harper as a guy who could be their starting catcher by the 2012/2013 season, they will take him. I just don't see how he can be put into that position as of yet.

He goes no lower than 4. I'm almost sure he doesn't go first or second. My lack of knowledge about Baltimore keeps me from having any idea on 3. I do know that the green light has been given if he gets to 4.

the angels had a very, very good draft in 2009...let's hope they follow suit in 2010. as an angels' fan, it was tough to see figgins and lackey go but i totally understand it. their system has been on a steady decline since 2005 when guys like kotchman, aybar, kendrick, etc. graduated to the bigs. i like the fact that our ownership is dedicated to being competitive while rebuilding the system.

Let's hope Wil Myers doesn't read these boards.

Can the Orioles really take him? It would force them to move either Wieters or Harper to 1B/DH or trade one of them when the opportunity comes. I just can't see a franchise that is trying to compete with two perennial powerhouses, and one team on the verge of breaking through consistently, using a top 5 pick forcing themselves to make another move.

harper is athletic enough to play either of the outfield corners as well. imo you take the best player available regardless of need.

Imagine he somehow slipped to the Mets.

I think the Pirates grab him at #2 and convert him to an Outfielder.

All told, the Jays have 10 of the first 125 picks. That's quite the bonanza. From everything that's been said, it would be a major, major shock if this year's draft bears any resemblance to last year's disaster. Word is that the Jays have $16MM (and one rival scout said that could be light) put aside for the draft (and even more for Int'l signings). I've also heard that nobody they like will slip past them due to signability concerns.

If that's all true, this should be a good year to restock the cupboard.

How do they rank the supplemental B picks?

Why does Rod Barjas + Gregg Zaun come before Mark DeRosa and Joel Pineiro?

All Free Agents are ranked by the Elias Sports Bureau using a complex methodology that weighs the player's last two seasons. Players are given a score out of 100 and the top 20% (I think) at each position are ranked Type A, the next group is B, and then the rest are unranked. Short answer, Barajas and Zaun had a higher score than Pineiro or Derosa.

Ah. That makes sense for Pineiro then, but I thought DeRosa had a nice enough '08 that he'd be higher than atleast Zaun.

I'll be quite perturbed the O's draft Harper. I don't see it happening. It will most likely be a SP as I'm not sure of a strong SS candidate this year (I haven't followed closely)
