Finished buying prizes. Official Hannukah contest/party...

OK, here we go, the official Hannukah contest and party thread. All prizes will help members spruce up their Jewish baseball players PC.

Here are the prizes (cards are incoming, so the scans are from eBay)

The first contest will be very simple. Write a poem about Hannukah. It could involve sports, but does not have to (in case anyone wants to connect the two, the Greeks were big into sport.) Poems will be judged based on how well the poem is writen, as well as the content. I'm a fan of humor, but impress me with something historical and you have a real shot. The winner will get the Hank Greenberg Bat card. Not sure if I will award a second place finisher.

Fine Print: Due to an issue with the last contest I held, I need to add this. It is the winner's responsibility to contact me with their address. I will do my best and pm everyone, but if I do not hear from anyone in 30 days or so, I can't guarantee I will still have the card (should be easy enough to follow.)

Hope everyone has lit their candles, received/gave some nice presents, eaten some good food, and is ready to have some fun.

Thanks. Doesn't compare to what you have in your collection (obviously) but it's a nice looking bat card from a HOFer (one of the very few Jewish HOFers.)

After celebrating a great 1st night of hannukah here at the Yarkony household... here is my hannukah poem.

In Sports by Seth Yarkony

Maccabi dominates Euroleague ball,
Proving the Jews always answer the call.
Since the time when Pharoah suppressed each Jew,
This fighting group has always come through.

Jews in sports are not a thing of the past
Who can forget their significance, at last?
Sandy, Selig, Spitz, to name a few,
Strug, Stern, Sasha- what great Jews!

Everyone knows the most famous names,
But lets not forget those who played for the love of the game.
Luckman, Rosen, Youkilis, and Green
Those were the guys you had to have seen!

While some of you sports fan may not know,
Jewish players have had a great go.
I have to again mention the famous Shawn Green,
To give props to my favorite, Badger fullback Matt Bernstein!

The Jewish owners have had influence too,
Reisdorf, Cuban, Davis, and Kraft- woohoo!
It is impossible name all of these stars,
But you get the point- the Jews have come far!

If it came down to a couple of poems which were of equal quality I might have to lean toward a Hannukah one (as that was the main topic.) That said, it's definitely in the running (at this point between posts and pm's I haven't exactly got a ton of material, but we'll let it run for a few more days (I may have it run until the end of Hanukkah, though I may choose to stop it earlier.)

I like it a lot. I like the rhyming, and the strong Jewish attachment. Also like the mention of the lesser known Jewish players. (I'm hoping to snag a Shawn Green autograph to be able to offer as a prize as well.)
