I think it just has to do more with protecting their $$ than getting soft. They don't want to lose Tom Brady for an entire season. Retarded? Yes, but in today's society, it's about the money, not the game.

They've banned the wedge return...wow.

In an age of football where you can't disagree with a ref's call AFTER the game, even when you're 100% calm and professional about it without getting penalized, why the hell not mess with the game too.

I wonder what the guys who started this game, without helmets or pads would think of todays game. I think that the players of old truely were the better specimens of toughness, in many sports.

They did it without the pads and medical treatment for injury, steroids weren't really around to ruin their bodies, and they just seemed tougher all around. Hell, Babe Ruth could hit a home drunk with a hot dog in his left hand. A different sport, yes, but you get the idea.

there's one more thing they did it without......they did it without getting pad millions!!! these pu$$y's are afraid to get hit....or owners are afraid of having to pay their QB if he goes down.......the NFLPA is ruining the sport......they should be able to knock a contract down to a lower price while a player is out......or make these guys get Aflac or some crap  .......the NFL is becoming way to soft.........that's why I like college more!

WHAT NEXT....ARE THEY GONNA LET WOMEN PLAY???

I'm laughing my ass off at hearing Pollard's hit wasn't dirty but Wilfork's was. Blind Patriot hate, anyone? (For the record, I don't think either one was dirty).
I don't hate these changes. The reason the rules need to change is quite simple: the PLAYERS are much different than they were in the 1960s. The wedge-breaking rule is good because, while they did it in the 60s, the guys breaking the wedges were not 6'2, 225 pounds and running a 4.5 40 yard dash, not to mention the fact that they didn't have the rock-hard helmets and shoulder pads that they have now. Wedge breakers and other special teams guys are usually paid the league minimum, and they likely have the shortest careers of anyone, not to mention the fact that they could easily end up with serious medical problems down the road. I don't see how anyone could disagree with that. Sure, I wish guys played like they did back in the old days, but considering the change in context, that is completely unreasonable.
The "Brady rule" is another in a long line of rule changes/re-enforcements that protect the quarterback, but this one is getting tons of flack. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that it's associated with Golden Boy Brady? Anyway, I would be surprised if this impacted the game much. I can only think of 3 instances of when a defensive player dragged a QB down from the ground this year: Brady's injury and 2 plays by Jared Allen that I believe were both flagged anyway.
Last, the protection of the receivers is crucial. Defensive backs are total headhunters these days, trying to make the highlight reel with a big hit. The fact that Ryan Clark hit Wes Welker helmet-to-helmet when the ball didn't even make it past the line of scrimmage is inexplicable, and has to be a penalty.

Blind Patriot fan anyone? Wilforks hit was clearly dirty.....he didn't try to wrap up.....atleast Pollard tried to wrap up while having a blocker on his back......Wilfork can clearly be seen launching his body toward Losman......then bringing his hand back toward his own body....extending his elbow.....he elbowed Losman in the knee.....and you say that's not dirty :? ......and the Ryan Clark on Welker hit.....I'll give you that......but DB's are supposed to be headhunters.....Rodney Harrison was in his prime.....but you'd have a different take on this if he didn't suck now.
