Your brain, assuming its functioning, should have bigger fish to fry (even on a baseball card message board). There is no excuse for getting worked up over something like Brian Wilson's antics. Direct your attention elsewhere.

Agreed. I guess some people just like monotone boring "We play to win the game" blah blah blah athletes with zero personality. What a bore. "I like athletes who have nothing to say and just play the game with their head down". How interesting.

Isn't that the purpose of a sports related internet message board? It's a means for one to use so that one can debate their issues and express their likes and dislikes.

Couple of pretty homophobic statements in this thread. One might go so far as to call those statements bigoted.

Interesting.

Debating issues? I guess I just don't see facial hair and celebratory hand gestures as issues. Also, some of the "debate" was stuff mentioned here:

As for indicating likes and dislikes, go for it. But there's no excuse for being annoyed over something that is so avoidable as an off-the-field personality.

After watching a couple eps of The Franchise, I have the utmost respect for the guy. Love Heeeeem.

You try losing your dad at 12. He has been a man for much, MUCH longer than some of the 'men' on these boards.

Brian Wilson might be the nicest guy on the planet, but his stupid-ass Zack Galifinakis Hangover gimmick is annoying as hell. His beard is dumb as hell and he makes himself look retarded as hell by wearing stupid ass clothes to the ESPYs

What an awful human being. Maybe you should take the time to trash players who actually do bad things. Like, you know, many of them. It's funny how much grief the guy gets when there are scumbag players out there who no one even talks about.

"Oh gee, I hate this guy for having the nerve to attempt to be different. What an a-hole."

Meanwhile there are players out there beating there wives and being downright scumbags.

I don't think it's as simple as you make it out to be. It's not that he's different. There is no problem with different, and no, I don't think people like boring-just-doing-my-job athletes, or at least teams with only those types. It's that Wilson is seemingly going out of his way to be a clown. No one on here has said he's a jerk/stupid/terrible/whatever, the point some of us are making is that his antics are just too over the top at this point. Go ahead, have a personality, please. That's great stuff. But what's with the ever-expanding repertoire of ridiculous quirks he's flashing now. The beard, the dress up, the arms, the machine, etc. It comes across as showy and insincere to a lot of us fans. No, not everyone needs to be Cal Ripken or Trevor Hoffman. But all of a sudden he's one of the better closers in the game and all of this comes out? Please don't tell me he's just now expressing himself. He got the spotlight for performance and he's trying to hold onto it with antics.

I wasn't saying that YOU are an awful human being. I was commenting on how venomous your words are about a guy who simply has a personality, as if he's an awful human being for being different.

How ridiculous. The guy is one of the better closers in the game and has won a World Series. He doesn't NEED to be such a crazy personality. It's not like it's making him tons of dough and he needs it to get by. Clearly he's a character and always has been and it came out more because he started getting recognition, ie opportunity to flaunt his personality. It's not some made up schlock he does for extra money/fame. I don't know him, but I would bet he is a weird dude in real life. I DO understand where you guys are coming from, because I always felt that way about Dennis Rodman. I always thought it was more of an act than really how he is, but who cares either way. He can do what he wants to do. He's not out abusing woman, being a general dirtbag, so what do I care if he likes to have a little fun by being a clown. Big freaking deal.

Ah, gotcha

As D-Lite said, he's going out of his way to get people's attention: and not in a good way. I liked Brian Wilson alot before he started acting like he's out of his mind by letting the beard grow out, talking weird, and wearing that suit to the ESPYs.

At first the beard was cool, now, it's old and making him look sad in a way.

I've got no beef with Brian Wilson as not being a nice guy, because i've heard hes one of the best, but it doesnt negate the fact that IMO he's acting like a complete attention-starved moron

But what most forget is that Wilson is simply adding to the act he had when he came into the league, you all just see him more because he has become popular. He was commanded by the Giants to stop using twitter 3 years ago because he was posting all sorts of crazy things. The machine was introduced to the world a couple of years ago during an interview. Wilson used to have a reality show named "Life of Brian" because he was an odd ball. Plus the "Fear the Beard" slogan was started by Sergio Romo and carried on by Wilson. So this persona isn't new, people hate him now because over the last 3 years no one has saved more games then he has and now the media is chosing to focus on his personality. Some people like him, some hate him. Heck I dislike "Tony Plush" to no end but he's performing very well this year and you can't discount the play on the field and only focus on the personality.

He doesn't need to do it, but he's clearly a character, now it's an opportunity to flaunt it, and it's not some made up schlock.

So which is it? Basically we can all agree he's a character and that he's going balls out with the antics because he's emerged as a very good closer (one very good and one great season and working on another very good one). But come on, it so obviously him grabbing for attention that it comes off obnoxious.

I'm not discounting play on the field as I think Wilson has done a nice job. But anybody that dislikes the Joba Chamberlain fist pump should definitely despise the Wilson clown show.

Bottom line: Do his teammates respect him and does he get the job done? Yes. Nuff said.
