I'm just curious as to why you guys with player collections collect that certain athlete? I have a Greg Reynolds collection because he's a really good friend of my brother's and they played baseball together growing up. I also collect Mark Reynolds because he's been a fantasy sleeper of mine for the last few years (not a sleeper anymore) and I've always liked him. The last name is just a conscience.

I collect Erick Aybar because.......

He is one of my top 5 favorite players.
He is a speedy scrappy player and i like those kind.
He is only 25 years old.
He doesnt have many cards releaded at all. (under 300 and 100 of those being 1 of 1's)
I dont know anyone else who collects him.
He is over looked by alot of people.
His cards are amazingly cheap.

I am pretty new to player collecting but so far i think im doing a good job.

Not sure if these two players are PC or prospects for now, but with the money I have put into them, I assume they are going to end up as PC.

Darwin Barney and Mitch Canham, both played at Oregon State (about 40 min drive from where I live)

Rusty Kuntz, just a really fun name to collect

I never had a finite reason. I respected how good/underrated he was, and that only grew over time.

It's a generatioanl thing. If you were a kid in the 80's, Robin Yount WAS baseball in Wisconsin. You're too young to know anything about the Braves. I assume the next generation will be Braun or something.

Plus, growing up, my dad had a mustache (still does), and that probably added some further Freudian connection between the idolization. whao, just got kind of deep on myself... :o

How's the selling of the collection coming along ?

For JJ, I wasn't prospecting, just taking a hunch on a guy who was injured (started dabbling with his stuff in April '08). Then it became a severe man crush and now I find it hard to even think about parting with just one card (that I have 20, 30 or 70 of  ) ...

i collect kenny lofton because of the 1995 ALCS...he was already my favorite player on my favorite team but against seattle in the ALCS that year he stole third and home on a passed ball...some might remember seeing it...i watched it live and immediately that is how i wanted to play the game...i grew up trying to be exactly like him (a little hard because i played shortstop) i just loved his attitude for the game...he didnt need to hit homeruns to effect the outcome

and yes man crush as well!

I've always thought Adam LaRoche was a solid player. IMO, he's one of those "If I were to start a team..." type players. Prior to collecting Adam, it had been a year or so since I sold off my Manny collection. I enjoyed (and missed) the quest associated with player collecting. LaRoche's trade to the Sox was the deciding factor to start over with him. As the collection has grown, I have found more and more interesting facts about Adam and his career that keep pushing me further.

Jason Tyner used to help coach my little league team when he played at A&M, and Jeff Bagwell because i grew up an astros fan and loved the way he played the game.

What part of Austin do you live in? I just remembered I owe you some Bagwell cards from forever ago and I'll be in austin in a couple weeks.

In the early 80's, Dwight Gooden was the most dominant athlete there was! Infact, I have never seen any Baseball player dominate the minors and then make the leap to the majors and be just as dominant as he was! I still can remember just how intimidating and feared he was in the mid 80's. For thoes few years, he was the best pitcher I had ever seen, past or present. And to this day I have yet to see a pitcher with such natural ability, confidence, command, and presence on the mound. In my eyes he is the best pitcher ever to take the mound in all of baseball. And this is why I collect him.

In 90 or 91 I started to collect. I became a Mariners fan because the AAA club was in Calgary still. So I've always collected Griffey, ARod, & other M's.

As for Thomas? Who knows! I honestly can't remember. SP came out in 93, and I was already a Frank fan. He was young and just becoming a star with Griffey. I remember seeing the the Platinum Power Die Cut in the case at the shop, and wanting it, and then pulling it! It was amazing!! It was one of the only PP out of 93 I got. Dad bought me a box for Xmas that year too. I think I still have the box....(sure hope so) with the lucite pop out that you put on the standup.

Ryan Sweeney-I got his '07 Heritage Chrome while busting a box of heritage he was on the White Sox then and I knew my other PC would be slowing down (FRANK THOMAS) So I decided to pick him as a new PC. Then Frank Thomas because of his power he was the "Big Hurt". And naming my first born Frank Thomas Mitchell :D Definetly a 1/1 ;)

As many of you know my main collection are Mexican born players. First started with one card of each and when that seemed to easy I continued to pick up as much as I could from each guy and with 111 players (and counting) plus being OCD, the formula didn't work out.
So I picked a good friend (Edgar Gonzalez) and a young guy who was just starting and I thought (and still think) he could be the next great Mexican slugger to go hardcore.

Beltran is my favorite player on my favorite team.Has the ability to make the H.O.F so it'll be fun to follow his career the next 7-10 years. He has a ton of nice cards including a bunch of great 90's inserts and all of his cards are very affordable.

I collect Fernando Tatis because his huge 2008 season.Came up clutch and helped the Mets win a ton of ballgames, plus he is in the 1998 donruss crusades set and makes going for a rainbow possible as his cards are super cheap

In 1988 my Dad bought me some packs of Topps, in one of those packs was a guy named Will Clark, who played for my favorite team, the Giants. My Dad told me how Clark was the best player on the team and how I need to take special care of that card. So I did, and I started collecting more of that card and others of Clark. I became more aware of baseball and began to respect how great a player Clark was in his early career and I became a huge fan. Too big of a fan according to my wife, we named or boy William to honor my childhood memory of my baseball hero.
