Fouling at the end of games

This has always bugged me and I've never found out why it is this way. At the end of games when a team is down they foul intentionally to force the other team to shoot free throws. Why are none of these fouls ever called as intentional fouls? They are not making a play on the ball. Especially when someone has a break away layup and they're just grabbed.

Yeah that is pretty crazy.
Wonder if there is anything in the rules or if it's just one of those accepted "unwritten rules"....

I got a couple more:

In those situations you also have to add the times guys are trying to reach in and foul like you described, miss and still get the whistle. See that happen a lot of times. The guy gets the whistle because of intent when the guy got away and should have run out another 5 seconds....doesn't seem right.

And don't they call intentional fouls if you foul a guy as you described during the in bounds? Not positive, but I think that is the case......because if it isn't then why wouldn't always foul the worst ft shooter and not have time taken off the clock? Makes no sense those are "intentional", and the other's aren't.

Probably over-analyzing it a bit......but after you mentioned it, it doesn't seem to make sense if you're adhering to the rules. :lol:

mostly because its apart of the game as long as your going for the ball it cant be considered intentional, allthough at times it sure does look that way.

and alot of the time the refs are told by the coaches thier fouling so their allready ready to blow the whiste and do even if they miss, allthough 2 years ago the Mavs got screwed over by a ref who couldnt put the stupid wistle in his mouth and make a freaking call
