I had the 86/87 Fleer basketball oops a few times. My best friends brother who was two years older was buying them and tried to convince me to collect them too, but I wasn't interested at the time. Them when I pulled my 4 91' Elite Nolan's, I was offered 2-3 Jordan's per and turned them down.

And Philly, I disagree about losing that trade ;) I think I spent $30 on my first Will Clark Fleer.

In terms of $ spent based on % it's worth now, I know I dropped $50+ on the 95' Team Pinnacle Westbrook/Galloway and $100+ on some of the football Playoff Quads. Another FB card I remember spending $75 or so on that is now a couple buck max is the 94' Museum Dan Marino.

For basketball, I can't remember exactly but enough was spent on that 92-94 era esp on Penny that I'd like to forget.

Some of the 1994 SP Holo Reds I spent $100-200 on that cost $10-20 now.

I'm sure there are plenty more but those stand out, but 1994 was prob my favorite year of collecting.

Oooh! Speaking of 1994, I traded a 1991 Classic Minors Mike Schmidt auto (I actually pulled one from a box I bought for $10 at KMart), $175 BV at the time, for a 1994 Leaf Limited Gold Frank Thomas, and a few significantly more minor cards. At the time, I think it was almost an even trade. A Schmidt recently sold for a $37.49 sale BIN. I've bought the Thomas at shows in dime boxes.

I suppose my biggest mistake that I can remember is breaking apart the 3 piece 81 Topps basketball cards. I probably had at least 2, maybe 3 of the Bird/Johnson rookies!

I seemed to always miss the good stuff somehow and in the one year that i did hit it, I damaged them!

I didn't buy the 84 Traded sets, but got every other year before and after. I bought hockey in 79, but never pulled a Gretzky (or the Howe that I really wanted). I didn't get any Jordans out of the 86/87 Basketball I bought (got most of the other big rookies, which makes me wonder if someone ripped me off when I didn't know better). I could never pull a Donruss Canseco RC. No wonder I don't buy packs/boxes anymore!!

I traded a 1962 Topps Mickey Mantle All Star to Bill's Sports Collectibles in Denver for a wax box of Upper Deck hockey. I really wanted one of those foil mask inserts. Turns out they were in a different product.

My friend was jealous that I had so many topps Gooden rookies and wouldn't trade him one back around '85.

I made the mistake of leaving him alone with them one day.

Now I know what you're thinking, that he stole a couple. Nope. Worse.

He abruptly left my house and when I went to put my cards away I noticed a big ol' slimy booger pasted onto one of the Gooden cards!

I ran down stairs and chased him.

As a kid I marked on several checklists from 1966 til around 1974. Also, I didn't understand why Topps would list 2 positions on the front of some of the player cards. You can only play 1 position at a time. So on those cards, like the 1966 Harmon Killebrew, which had him playing 3B-1B, I marked through the position I thought he shoudn't be playing.::facepalm::

#1 When I was working in radio in Evansville (Indiana)in the mid 80's, Don Mattingly, who is from Evansville, stopped by our studios for an interview and I had him sign a few of his rookie cards.

I later ended up giving them away to some Beckett Board members.

#2 I should have never started collecting T206s. It's a set I will never complete! :-) Currently stuck at 518 of 524. Anyone have a couple million laying around so I can get the "Big Four" and two others? :-)

I guess the mistake was initially believing in Limited production inserts in the early 1990's and integrity in the card business and no such thing as cards going out the back door of card companies. That changed when I was doing a show when the 1992-93 Beam Team Shaqs and Jordans were going for 300.00 each. A guy came in the card show and asked me if I was buying them. I said yes and he then produced a 5000 ct box( half filled with Jordan and the other with Shaqs( UNSLEEVED). Woke my eyes really quick seeing 2000+ cards of each...........

Oh yeah, the 81 Basketball. I couldn't help myself breaking them apart. But they were so small they were hard to deal with. But they had perforations. You HAD to break them apart.
