Can you imagine Topps as the ONLY company making cards?

We would "finally" get that coveted Mickey Mantle card with him wearing a Nationals jersey with eye black and wristbands.

And if we are REALLY lucky, we could all add that very special Ted Williams card in an Expos uniform complete with "Big Papi" armor sporting a goatee and "Jersey Shore" hair.

And the way Topps treated collectors back then was good? Only game in town means lazyness and "who the heck cares, they have no choice" attitude, something which Topps THRIVES at doing.

Here is the thread from last week.

My thoughts:

1) I believe very little of what I read in the NY Post. ( They have a history of muck-raking, imho)
2) Anytime a source outside the hobby, writes about the hobby, they inherently get facts wrong.
3) The article states that Konami's lawyer is seeking $100s of millions in damages. That being said,
even it is only $100 million exactly for 600,000 cards, that means Konami is placing a value of $166
on each card?

If anything, if damages are awarded to Konami by the judge in this case, I don't see it crippling UD.

I dont see Konami getting over 100 million in damages, But you never know what will happen. I see Upper Deck being gone within 5 years time over this. NHL will probably think about giving them a new contract. Major sport celeb's that are signed with them might bail over this. Seeing it as bad press, They're associated with counterfiters in a hobby that has huge issues with them. The small part time collectors will most likely bail on them. I personally do not like Upper Deck, But they do make great cards. I also had to file complaints with the BBB, I sent in 20 different redemptions all seperate and cert mail. Three of them were Jordan auto's, I photo copied all of them.. Well, I called and they were being sent out, Two dayes later I wasnt getting a thing. System purged and all were lost they claimed.. BBB sided with me when UD claimed the cards were valuable on the secondary market..I qouted all contracts they had that stated,"UD could not declare secondary market values".. It will be bad if they go down, But in all fair markets it has to happen.

UD has taken an enormous number of hits lately, this could be the straw that breaks the monkey's back imho. As a Hall-of-Fame customer of theirs (top tier for a retailer), I am hesitant to place any direct orders at the moment. This past year has been the wildest by far of the 20 I've been in the industry, and very few of the events have been positive.

I have one redemption that is "in the process of shipping". As soon as I get that, its no more UD ANYTHING for a while.

I don't think this is true, but only because I think you're only including 'elite collectors' and the people who sell/cater to them. Elite folks spend much time in the hobby's secondary (non Target, Walmart) marketplace. The elite group is a very small minority of all people in the hobby and who look at the world differently than regular collectors.

Regular collectors, on the other hand, have always enjoyed Topps because it has always met their simple (non-elite), traditional collecting expectations.
