What do you guys think will be the future value down the road of common Topps, Ultimate Collection, Bowman, SPA, etc. base cards. I think everyone here has a fair share [I'm organizing about 10k from 08/09 as we speak].

Will they be as worthless as the late 80's, early 90's cards? Like 10 years from now, 25 years from now, 50 years from now.

base sets like topps 80s and 90s hard sets to put together could maintain value like heritage with all the sps

if it isn't chrome, throw them in the dumpster.

And that's why they will be worth money.

Remind me again why 1952 Mantles are worth so much.

present value = worthless, future value = worthless.

I try to trade them off right away, and then trash them unless they are popular for set builders (Heritage, A*G)...

Unless the Hobby changes, base cards, even from Bowman Chrome, Heritage and SP Authentic, etc. wont command any value. Obviously, Im not talking autos or GU or SP's.

Look at 1993 Finest, a set which was ground breaking and was the first super premium product. A set which showed the world that collectors will pay a TON for cards they deem as rare. A set which exlploded inserts to new heights.

You can pick up the best of the best, the most valuable and collected players of that time (Ryan, Cal, Griffey, etc) for less than $5 a card. Sometimes way less. Im not talking Refs for sure, just base cards.

Products with serial numbered base cards (not parallels), like Exquisite, Ultimate, maybe TT, could hold value down the road. But just dont expect your 2002 BC Pujols to ever command more than a few dollars.

The reason why base cards USED to hold value was because there were no inserts, GU, autos, SP's (for the most part) to drive single card sales. "Something" had to be worth money. Rookies and stars were the only valuable cards you could get in a pack with the once in a while error card.

Unless it is a high value insert, than nada. There is to much of it out there and people throw them away.

People throwing them out is what makes the cards from the 1950's worth so much.

Yes, but you have to realize that there are a million times more base now than there was 60 years ago. Mass production kills. Why are game used cards worthless now?

Yeah but you have to realize that nowdays...everybody is worried about the inserts. And by inserts...I only mean GU patches and autos. Even normal GU are hardly commanding anything. So with every single person's attention focused only on those...the base cards really do get tossed. The people who build sets keep them and the rest either go in a storage unit or go in the trash. You honestly don't think that at some point in time...there will be a shortage? Not to mention, one thing that really sparked over production was high interest. There is a very minute amount of interest in any sports collectibles as a whole now compared to what there was. Which means all these commons, you guys busting case after case...they are in the hands of a very small percentage of the human population. Sure new wax gets busted but the problem is...the amount of people collecting now is so small that if baseball card collecting ever gets big again for some reason...the demand could overwhelm the supply. All of a sudden all anyone has is GU and autos because who the hell cared about the base cards.

One thing I do not quite understand is how you guys can just throw out base cards. Build some damn sets already. If you don't want to do that...give them to people who do. There are probably a bunch of you throwing away cards right this very minute that collectors like me are going to sportslots and buying at 18 cents a pop to finish sets. Bust any 2010 UD, 2009 topps chicle, 2008 stadium club baseball, UD Documentary, 2009 UD Baseball? Stuff like that? Throw any of them away? Yep well...people like me build the sets. Seriously...instead of trying to make a fortune off of everything you bust, take them to a flea market or somewhere and offer them at 25 cents a card for the star players and 5 cents a pop for the no namers. I am sure you could sell some of them and on top of it...get some kids into collecting again too. This hobby was built on base cards. To have no respect for them leaves me to believe a few people have been a bit spoiled. Guess you guys would stop altogether if they didn't make GU or autos anymore?

I hope not. Few people read my endless ramblings. In any case...I guess what gets my goat is I feel that there is still something to be said about a base card. Plus...if my local hobby shop didn't have any base cards for me to finish my sets...I wouldn't ever buy cards from there. Sure I get some nice deals on singles(picked up a Brett Farve Stadium RC, Ultra RC, and UD RC, plus a Elway RC all for $45) but I might as well pay the extra $10 or $15 online and save the gas and the trip. I like talking about the hobby at my local shop but it would be a very rare occurrence if they didn't ahve what I wanted.

Whats weirder still is that I don't know how many times I go to a show or a shop just to find out that nobody has any base cards of any of the sets I am building. My local shop helped me big time this week on trying to narrow down the remainder of what I needed for my 1992 Bowman set(down to needing 84 total cards for the complete set), but only had a small handful of the new UD baseball. Not one single solitary card from Chicle and nothing at all on any of the other sets I am building. Not even one 2009 BDDP card. Not one. I go to another few shops and they supposedly never have any base cards for sets unless you like picking through common star cards at 50 cents a piece. Hell...even most of those are non-existant unless you hit up the flea market. In fact the guy out in Alvin who runs the Old Ballpark doesn't have a single base card that I know of for sale. He has nothing but autos and GU in his display cases and a bunch of new wax and supplies. That is it.

Trust me...base cards are not as easy to come by unless you yourself are busting the wax. I am getting to the point where I may start just buying completed sets. My only problem si that I don't get to bust enough wax that I can keep cards of the players I actually collect. I always like to bust a few blasters or a box so I can have singles for myself.

And if folks were smart, they'd have several boxes of base, specific to team. They could get money off that, but are too busy trying to find George Washingtons Constitution worn underpants or a Babe Ruth cut auto that is too small to fit in a thimble.

I don't buy much wax because I'm mainly a player collector. The only set I'm fiddling with is a '00 Score Final Score set, which no card is serial numbered higher than 66

great post and great point about the hobby condition in general!

I mean, one would think that instead of tossing base in the dumpster, try packing 100 brown paper bags and giving them away to the youngsters, 90 might throw em away, ten might become collectors for life! Does us all good!
