Yankees release RHP Chad Gaudin, 1 of 5 candidates for the 5th starter spot

TAMPA, Fla. — The New York Yankees have released pitcher Chad Gaudin, who was one of five candidates for the fifth starter spot.

New York general manager Brian Cashman made the announcement on Thursday. Gaudin went 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 games, including six starts, with the Yankees last season.

The Mets are already "discussing" recently-released righty Chad Gaudin, according to Newsday's David Lennon.

Gaudin is likely to draw interest from more than just one team, but the Mets could certainly use him. The 27-year-old posted a 4.64 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 139 strikeouts over 31 appearances (147 1/3 innings) last season in baseball's toughest division. He'd probably do well with a move back to the National League and would bring some stability to the Metropolitans' staff.

This one and not resigning Matusi or Damon. How can you repalce what both Damon and Matsui did offensively last year? Matsui was a great clutch hitter and Damon knew how to get on base and work the count.

This one and not resigning Matusi or Damon. How can you repalce what both Damon and Matsui did offensively last year? Matsui was a great clutch hitter and Damon knew how to get on base and work the count.

And Nick Johnson knows how to get on base and work the count. Granderson can play center, which Damon could not. Granderson is also likely to hit 30 HR and is in the prime of his career, while Matsui and Damon are in the twilight of their respective careers. Johnson will fill the gap until Montero is ready. I think Cashman has done a fine job this offseason with those moves and adding Vazquez. There's no satisfying some Yankee fans.
