GM offers to get exam during game

Darren RovellX[ARCHIVE]XESPN.com | July 20, 2014

Andy Milovich has offered to go this week where no man has gone before: A prostate exam in front of a full stadium of fans.

Milovich, the general manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Single-A affiliate of theXTexas Rangers, offered to have the exam while singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch if local 10-year-old Fallon Emery, who has brain cancer, gets 10,000 likes on her Facebook page before the game.

"It's not like I would be getting it at home plate," Milovich said. "I'll likely do it from our radio booth and the fans will see me from the shoulder up."

Last week, Milovich was promoting Thursday night's game, which has a prostate cancer awareness focus, when a reporter for a morning talk show asked him if he was willing to get a prostate exam at the game.

In typical minor league fashion, Milovich's team went to work and decided to tie it to supportingXthe Facebook page of Emery, who has been battling brain cancer for the last seven months.

The team had already planned to give out 1,000 foam fingers with blue ribbons on them to the first 1,000 men age 18 and older. But if Emery's page gets 10,000 likes by noon ET on Thursday -- it was at 6,800 on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET -- Milovich will make good on his promise.

"If what we do saves a kid from having to lose his or her father because they get checked out, this will be worth it," Milovich said.

The team is raising money for Emery on Aug. 2, auctioning off items signed by sports luminaries, including South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier and Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney.

Did anyone else but me laugh hysterically at the irony of handing out blue foam fingers to the 1st 1000 men on prostate cancer awareness night?

Not me. Prostate cancer runs in my family, and my father and Uncle both died from it at late ages in their lives . And it said they will be foam fingers with blue ribbons on them and not blue finger. And that was already the promation for not day, since it is prostate awareness

Nice gesture but I'm not sure what the point is of promising to get a prostate exam during a game.

To promote men in their late 40's and older to have an exam rather than be stubborn and die of a curable/treatable cancer.

Had mine done, twice!

I was not laughing at the illness itself or the effort to get stubborn guys to have a prostate exam most would rather not have. I just felt that giving away giant blue foam fingers with a ribbon around it was in bad taste. All they were missing was the complimentary sample of Vaseline to really make the promotion crass.

I believe it is the Milwaukee Brewers that have prostate awareness and they have a medical trailer parked outside the park and give two tickets away to any guy willing to have the exam completed in this trailer. No foam fingers, no stupid stunts, just a simple ticket exchange for the exam. It would seem to me that a more serious approach to prostate awareness will be more effective than giving away foam fingers.

This 100%. Way more effective than having some minor league GM stand up there and get a prostate exam in the booth.

Look at youuuuu! Trying to be a smart @ss.

That's hardly shows why he's doing it this way. The poster below with the story about the brewers is 1000% times more effective. Sure getting some 10.000 Facebook likes is nice but having prostate exams at the field and giving away tickets to the people who do it is a much better solution than some GM standing in a booth getting a prostate exam done during the game

1) Is giving away tickets to a Brewers game really 100% more effective then what this minor league GM is doing? Really?
2) Its a single A affiliate! What minor league team does NOT attempt to have some out of the ordinary promotion, tasteful or distasteful (in some peoples eyes) to put butts (pun intended) in the seats?
3) Look at this, its working, we are having a discussion about it, as are others on the internet. How many here knew that the Brewers would give away tickets if you had an exam in the parking lot of Miller Park? Not I and Ive been to a game there this year.
4) In conjunction with the Prostate Awareness they had already planned for the game, they are raising funds for a kid with brain cancer. I guess I just dont see the issue here. Get prostate awareness out there AND have a fund raiser for a sick child.

Is cancer a horrible disease, it sure the **** is. I have had some dear friends battle cancer and win, and some that have lost. I miss those that have passed on every day. However I attempt to take a light hearted approach because without a true cure for cancer, all I can do it laugh, pray and love those battling it. My dear friend Sharyl had the best approach during her battle, she refused to let cancer define her. In the end, cancer won, but it didnt defeat her. If you ever want to read an inspiration book, below is a link to the site and book created of her memoirs.

Nope, I just pointed out what was in the OP, and pointing out your failure to read. People do it ALL the time, post without reading, just like you did. My apologies if you take that as being a smart ass.

Seems to me it is pretty effectivly if 450 men were screened at last years event! All without anything but a offer for a few free tickets.

Just because it is a minor league team does not mean it has to handle a situation is delicate as this in a crass manner. I Am all for getting people's attention and I applaud their attempt to bring attention to this terrible cancer but there are better ways to make this point.

3) Look at this, its working, we are having a discussion about it, as are others on the internet. How many here knew that the Brewers would give away tickets if you had an exam in the parking lot of Miller Park? Not I and Ive been to a game there this year.

The Brewers announce it at games, in their promtional material, through the media both electronic and print and even the Milwaukee TV stations do live remotes from the parking lot during this promotion. If you are from the Milwaukee area and have not heard, seen or read of this promotion that you just have not been paying attention. Again, 450 men turned out last year. It seems to be someone got the message.
4) In conjunction with the Prostate Awareness they had already planned for the game, they are raising funds for a kid with brain cancer. I guess I just dont see the issue here. Get prostate awareness out there AND have a fund raiser for a sick child.

No Argument here about rasing funds for cancer research or for helping the child's family with mounting medical expenses. It is a good cause but as mentioned, the only issue is they could have handled it a bit more delicatly that giving away giant foam fingers.

Cancer is hell. No doubt about it. I nearly lost my wife quite a few years ago to a very aggressive and rare form of breast cancer where those who get it have only a 3% chance of survival. I have lost other loved ones from this terrible illness. Cancer, and the ways to treat it is not something I would wish on even my worst enemy.

My answers are above.

Edited to add...I am not trying to argue but just sharing my point of view.

Mchenrycards, I didnt take anything you said as argumentative, just so we are both clear. :-)

450 got the message which is great, however that was segregated to the Greater Milwaukee Area.

How many are getting the message with this promotion, nationwide? We will never know, but the word of mouth via the internet is amazing. Will some people that hear about this go hmmmmmm....maybe I should go and get checked out? Hard to say, but I still dont see what they are doing as negative in any manner, just my opinion.
Heck I even heard about this twice today, once here after I got into work, the other being on a morning radio program in Minneapolis/St Paul.
I would never know about the Brewers deal if you had not mentioned it. Like I said, I was at a game this year and nothing registers hearing about it there.

Finally, if you care to share here or via PM, what form did your wife defeat? I ask because my friend Sharyl fought triple-negative breast cancer, a highly aggressive form of breast cancer.

My wife had inflamatory breast cancer and more information can be found here:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Sites-Types/IBC

I see, from reading this article that survival rates have risen in recent years as doctors have learned to recognize this type of cancer and have developed ways to treat it effectivly. My wife went through several rounds of the worst and most potent chemo a person can receive (not my words but the doctors). She then had a mastectemy, 8 weeks of radiation and just to be sure they got it all, more of the same chemo. Honestly, I wasnt sure from one day to the next if I would have my best friend and wife around for our future and in my mind I was preparing for the worst. Thanks to a doctor who kept up on trends and the latest treatment methods of this cancer and the good Lord above, she is still here 12 years later.

I can tell you the cancer and chemo took allot out of her. If you even get the chance look up chemo brain and you will know what she has been dealing with since that time. She still is unable to work as she gets tired very easily and there have been some noticeable changes in her personality since she battled the cancer. Despite all of this she is still here and to me, that is all that counts.

Thanks for asking Musial!

Wow
Lets escalate this thread into a bad thing instead of a good thing to stand up to cancer screening. I don't think the promotion was in bad taste but that is my opinion.

But what I find funny, how people can go off the deep end when some one posts something, most of the time on here. Now I'm guilty of it from time to time, but it is sarcasm and sometimes tongue in cheek so to say and not so much a comment directed to a person on a personal level though........

I dont believe Mchenry, nor do I think I went off the deep end, we actually had a civilized discussion, a first for FCB?

Mchenry, thank you for sharing. It is wonderful that your beat cancer and is with you and your family, so so happy for you.
And I know all about chemo brain, absolutely crazy the **** one has to put in there body to defeat cancer!!!

If you or your wife are readers and would like to read Sharyl's book, LMK and I will send you my copy to read.
To me, this book is an inspiration to all that have gone thru, or will go thru, this tough battle. Knowing that you will not see your children grow up, play sports, dance in competitions, graduate HS/college, get married, have children, etc, yet have a completely positive outlook on life is second to none.
