I like the way fox just put him in a line up with gehrig, dimaggio, and Berra as only players w/ 2 GW RBI in WS clinching games. Talk about company.

lots of nay sayers on helton, biggio, thome too...this board has been wrong on so many

I do think i was wrong on andruw though...he definetely fizzled..but i think i have got all the rest right that I have picked

I also say michael young gets in and matt holliday...when matt was on rockies everyone said no, just because he was a rockie..now that he hits in front of or behind pujols, many will still say no....but wait and see.

10 years ago Jeter wasnt even in his prime so it was obviously hard to put him in the HOF. Renteria isnt a HOF player, not close.

not even close?
It will look much better if he gets ws mvp...if he doesn't get it, then i won't hold my breath.

Hey, we all feel how we do about baseball.

Im not sure how old you are, but i was born in 1971 and have seen my share of games over the years.
Two guys ive seen play that i dont SEE as HOFers are, even though their "numbers" are nice are

Thome (compiler who never really "stood out" imo)
Palmiero (compiler who never really "stood out" imo)

You really aren't that far off, who cares what people think. Do I think Edgar Renteria DESERVES to be in the HOF? No. Do I think he has a legitimate shot? Yes.

It doesn't matter if people think Player X deserves to be in the HOF or not. Just b/c you don't think he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF, doesn't mean he won't make it.

I don't think Goose Gossage, Bruce Sutter, Gary Carter, Tony Perez, or Ryne Sandberg should be in the HOF, but that didn't stop the writers.

Edgar needs 4-5 more productive seasons and get really close to/over 3,000 hits and I say he will get in.

With a few more productive years anything is possible. Just not sure how we can be enshrining someone who never ranked higher than 15th in league MVP voting. His career is not over so we'll see.

Just about.

I snickered when I saw the topic of this post, but was surprised to see his BR comps. I don't think those factor in defense though and in my mind, Renteria has been average to below average defensively (and it seems the scouts match the stats on this issue) and unless you're ARod, I have a hard time putting a SS in that isn't above average defensively. But if Edgar is truly 33, a run at 3,000 hits can't be ruled out and that will make things interesting.

To me though, Trammell was considerably better than Edgar despite what the BR comp is showing. OPS+ of 110 vs 94 and he was a really, really good defensive SS - just overshadowed by Ozzie. IMO, he is a slam dunk HOF'er and it is a shame he isn't getting more support.

Thanks for the post. Something to monitor at least.

All I said was that if he wins WSMVP, that it will push him over the baseballreference 100, and that he will deserve consideration, as a borderline HOFER, and my personal opinion depends on what he does in the next 5 years. One more big feather in his cap will get him in imho.

WS MVP actually does not factor into BR HOF Monitor

I've always thought ER was a little under-rated and aside from the folks in Boston, most would agree.

But he isn't in Trammell's class and isn't very close to a HOFer either. Josh Beckett has also been great in the Post-Season but he isn't a HOFer either.

Renteria will be in the San Francisco Giants HOF. That's for sure. Cooperstown probably not soo much.

No way he gets into the Hall of Fame is what I'm saying.[/quote:27iyxt2o]

what if he plays 8 more years (he's only 33, so 41 is not of the question) and gets 3,029 hits?

i'm definitely playing a stretch-game here, but no way he doesn't make the HOF with that total # of hits? and his postseason record?

It's the same with Johnny Damon. Many don't think Damon will make it but if they both get close to 3,000 hits or over, it is most likely they will both get in.

When I first saw this thread my reaction was... 'no way.' Upon reflection though, Renteria is definately in the conversation, and I'm leaning toward thinking another productive season with SF making the postseason in 2011 probably gets him in. The whole DiMaggio, Berra, Gehrig and Renteria line has to be considered, and his career stats are better than I realized. Anyway - food for thought at the very least and the OP will be Thanked.
