Latest tweet from Olney says they've been discussing combo deals, one which would include Heath Bell
Interesting that this seems like the first time Theo is willing to let go of the top prospects in the system....It either speaks volumes of how he views Gonzalez or they seemed to have a great draft last year, or maybe that combined with the compensation picks they'll receive this year have him believing they'll reload.

The latest Heath bell wrinkle makes me think that Bard could be included. I imagine 2 of Kelly/Rizzo/Iglesias + 2 of the Pimentel/Britton/Navarro type go over to SD. If Bard is included, obviously I would expect the prospect return to be much less (i.e. Bard + 1 of the three a's, one of the three b's, and a C)

Ellsbury, Scutaro, Kelly, Stolmy, Rizzo for Gonzalez/Bell, with teams swapping some lower level prospects
I'm willing to bet that Bard is NOT traded.baseballguy350 said:Way too much smoke in the twitterverse for there not to be fire. I would be surprised if Rosenthal doesn't tweet that a deal has been agreed to in principle within 36 hours.

My argument? Gonzalez and his agent know the sox want him badly. even if he was to be traded to say, the Cubs, there's nothing forcing him to sign with them. He can still become a free agent next year. Another factor that adds into this thing are the Yankees. They have Teixeira and will/would not attempt to sign Gonzalez. The sox would be able to offer him the biggest amount next year with no Yankee team chasing after him.
This team has made 2 big mistakes in the past few seasons. Not getting Teixeira and now not resigning V-Mart. If the Sox are willing to sign Crawford this offseason (and stay far the hell away from Werth) and then trade for Gonzalez, great. But, if they trade the farm for Gonzalez and simply add a few relievers with no other big names, might as well forget it and just wait till next year and keep your prospects.
As well as not even competing in the AL East for 2011.....rymflaherty said:MallCopKJ said:Way, way, way, way, way, way too much to give up for a guy that will be a free agent next year. As you were saying - there are potential problems that can occur by waiting. Any number of things could happen beyond Theo's control.
You also have to factor in this off-season for the Red Sox. You can wait and hope a year for Gonzalez, but what happens in the meantime?
The best option for the 2010 team would then be bringing back Beltre.....but if you make that move then you probably don't/can't go after Gonzalez.
So then you're probably going the patchwork route.....Bring in Lee if you can get him for a 1 year contract? Try Lowrie at 3rd? Some average at best vet? ...... waiting for a guy you may not even land. That could work out favorable, if everything goes as planned, but it is also risky.
