Way, way, way, way, way, way too much to give up for a guy that will be a free agent next year. Ok, so you say: "The Padres will trade him to someone, if the Red Sox don't act now they will miss out and won't have a chance to get him next offseason."

My argument? Gonzalez and his agent know the sox want him badly. even if he was to be traded to say, the Cubs, there's nothing forcing him to sign with them. He can still become a free agent next year. Another factor that adds into this thing are the Yankees. They have Teixeira and will/would not attempt to sign Gonzalez. The sox would be able to offer him the biggest amount next year with no Yankee team chasing after him.

This team has made 2 big mistakes in the past few seasons. Not getting Teixeira and now not resigning V-Mart. If the Sox are willing to sign Crawford this offseason (and stay far the hell away from Werth) and then trade for Gonzalez, great. But, if they trade the farm for Gonzalez and simply add a few relievers with no other big names, might as well forget it and just wait till next year and keep your prospects.

As you were saying - there are potential problems that can occur by waiting. Any number of things could happen beyond Theo's control.

You also have to factor in this off-season for the Red Sox. You can wait and hope a year for Gonzalez, but what happens in the meantime?
The best option for the 2010 team would then be bringing back Beltre.....but if you make that move then you probably don't/can't go after Gonzalez.
So then you're probably going the patchwork route.....Bring in Lee if you can get him for a 1 year contract? Try Lowrie at 3rd? Some average at best vet? ...... waiting for a guy you may not even land. That could work out favorable, if everything goes as planned, but it is also risky.
As well as not even competing in the AL East for 2011.....

I still maintain the worst move possible this offseason was not signing Victor Martinez. They have plenty of money that they could have afforded to resign Victor, sign Crawford, pick up Derrek Lee and let Beltre walk. Martinez' deal was a steal. The guy was a middle of the order bat for this team. They team could have looked like:

C: Victor Martinez
1B: Derrek Lee
2nd: Pedroia
SS: Scutaro
3rd: Youkilis
LF: Crawford
CF: Ellsbury
RF: Drew

Next year, Drew comes off the books, you replace his $14 million with Ryan Kalish for basically nothing.
The outfield is: Crawford, Ellsbury, Kalish. In the infield, Scutaro is gone, hes replaced by Iglesias for nothing. Youkilis is used to 3rd again and Lee walks allowing them to sign Adrian Gonzalez.
The infield is then: Gonzalez, Pedroia, Iglesias and Youkilis.

I actually see more problems for the Red Sox if they DO trade for Gonalez. They will have no SS next year if they deal Iglesias, no closer if Bard is included, no right fielder is Kalish is included and if they dont sign Crawford because of the huge impending extension they need to give Gonzalez now, no left fielder either.

All the rumors I've heard thus far have not included Iglesias, Bard or Kalish.....so that could very well wind up a non issue.

I would have assumed they brought back Martinez as well. I can see though that they were making a decision where they didn't think he was worth it 3-4 years from now, as it clearly would have made them better for the 2011 season (by the way meant 2011 in my last post....when I typed the 2010 season), so I can live with that.

I also wouldn't count out Lowrie yet.....he could prove to be a valuable contributor. Maybe even the starting shortstop next year. He seems to have the vote of confidence among many of the stat-crunching die-hard Red Sox fans.

I'm excited about the prospect of A Gon going to Boston. Seeing him play everyday was a treat and I'll enjoy him being on my favorite team as well. I'm a little surprised by the attitude of people here in San Diego though. They mostly seem to just want him to go. I think it's the fact that they know that they can't resign him and they had better just get something for him. I really don't think Iglesias is involved. Please over here seem to know he's untouchable. If A Gon's contract still had more than one year on it then he would be a possibility.

Red Sox, Padres Close On Adrian Gonzalez Trade
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 4 at 12:01am CST]

SATURDAY, 12:01am: The Red Sox are very close to acquiring Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres, tweets Dan Hayes of the North County Times. Hayes says the trade would just involve Gonzalez and not Heath Bell, whose name has come up in other rumors. Hayes adds that the deal will only involve minor leaguers - not players such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Bard, or Jed Lowrie. Casey Kelly would definitely be involved.

Buster Olney via Twitter about 1 hour ago:

Sources: Padres and Red Sox have agreed to a Gonzalez trade, pending physical -- and perhaps negotiations with the first baseman. We'll see.

Didn't think they would trade Ellsbury.

Any stabs at the other prospects involved? I think Rizzo would have to be involved.

Hey baseballguy, Gonzalez will hit 60 HR in Fenway.

The nice sound of silence from a Yankee fan who can't find anything negative to say for a change. Maybe the first time ever?

My prediction remains Kelly, Rizzo, Pimentel, Navarro. Extension at 6 @ 125.

Should I sell my Pimentel stash???

I'd still like the red!

Someone recently unloaded, and I don't actually think now is the time to sell.

The orange was over $100, and the blue was right around $50 during the season.

I sell Rizzo, hold Kelly, buy Pimentel.

The reason for buying Pimentel would be the expected drop in price going to SD. Truth is, he is still the same prospect, just with a different team. He wasn't going to pitch for Boston anyways with too much blocking him.

Empty the damn farm for him! I don't care what prospects were given up, if they extend his deal this is an amazing trade.

Now go get Crawford. Enough of this "poor us, we can't compete with the Yankees payroll" bs.

+1 !!!!! Agree on both fronts!! With the picks from V-Mart they can re-load, though I guess they would lose 'em if they sign CC.

Gordon Edes Source: Kelly, Rizzo, Fuentes to San Diego.

Theo flew back with Gonzalez to Boston from San Diego Friday night.

The guys on the MLB network just said Crawford could draw an 8 year deal. If that's the case I'm ok getting Soriano and Werth instead. It's too bad they blew all that money on Lackey and Beckett or they could be in the Lee race.

PTBNL also involved, meaning it is likely someone from the 2010 draft that is not eligible to be traded yet.

I bet it will Raunado or Workman.
