Re: Gonzalez trade possible to Boston
I still maintain the worst move possible this offseason was not signing Victor Martinez. They have plenty of money that they could have afforded to resign Victor, sign Crawford, pick up Derrek Lee and let Beltre walk. Martinez' deal was a steal. The guy was a middle of the order bat for this team. They team could have looked like:
C: Victor Martinez
1B: Derrek Lee
2nd: Pedroia
SS: Scutaro
3rd: Youkilis
LF: Crawford
CF: Ellsbury
RF: Drew
Next year, Drew comes off the books, you replace his $14 million with Ryan Kalish for basically nothing.
The outfield is: Crawford, Ellsbury, Kalish. In the infield, Scutaro is gone, hes replaced by Iglesias for nothing. Youkilis is used to 3rd again and Lee walks allowing them to sign Adrian Gonzalez.
The infield is then: Gonzalez, Pedroia, Iglesias and Youkilis.
I actually see more problems for the Red Sox if they DO trade for Gonalez. They will have no SS next year if they deal Iglesias, no closer if Bard is included, no right fielder is Kalish is included and if they dont sign Crawford because of the huge impending extension they need to give Gonzalez now, no left fielder either.

Ok, so you say: "The Padres will trade him to someone, if the Red Sox don't act now they will miss out and won't have a chance to get him next offseason."
My argument? Gonzalez and his agent know the sox want him badly. even if he was to be traded to say, the Cubs, there's nothing forcing him to sign with them. He can still become a free agent next year. Another factor that adds into this thing are the Yankees. They have Teixeira and will/would not attempt to sign Gonzalez. The sox would be able to offer him the biggest amount next year with no Yankee team chasing after him.
This team has made 2 big mistakes in the past few seasons. Not getting Teixeira and now not resigning V-Mart. If the Sox are willing to sign Crawford this offseason (and stay far the hell away from Werth) and then trade for Gonzalez, great. But, if they trade the farm for Gonzalez and simply add a few relievers with no other big names, might as well forget it and just wait till next year and keep your prospects.
As you were saying - there are potential problems that can occur by waiting. Any number of things could happen beyond Theo's control.
You also have to factor in this off-season for the Red Sox. You can wait and hope a year for Gonzalez, but what happens in the meantime?
The best option for the 2010 team would then be bringing back Beltre.....but if you make that move then you probably don't/can't go after Gonzalez.
So then you're probably going the patchwork route.....Bring in Lee if you can get him for a 1 year contract? Try Lowrie at 3rd? Some average at best vet? ...... waiting for a guy you may not even land. That could work out favorable, if everything goes as planned, but it is also risky.
