Got One of Those "Garage Is Filled with Cards" Calls Today

Every week we get dozens of well intentioned folks who have thousands of 1980s-1990s cards for sale. It's tough telling them that they are essentially worthless. We fielded another one of those calls today. An older lady from Virginia whose husband just unexpectedly died. She said her whole garage was basically filled with her husband's cards. Reluctantly, we ventured to the house, fully expecting 1988 Donruss and 1990 Topps. What a surprise this was though! Six Unopened Cases of 2004-2007 Topps Heritage and (30) 5,000 count boxes of 2001-2007 Topps Heritage sets! Included several 2001 Heritage sets with Chrome, hundreds of autos, seat relics, black chrome refractors and dual relic autos. Her phone call will yield probably 10-15K. Good finds still happen!

Wow - I wonder who her husband was? If he had that much high-end Heritage stuff I'm sure I have dealt with him in the past, but I don't recall anyone from Virginia.

I need 2 cards from 2001 chrome to complete my set. I'm assuming that everything will be sold in a Huggins and Scott Auction?

To be honest, I don't think most Heritage buyers check the Huggins and Scott auctions much, and you will get a much better return just listing on ebay, fees and all.

That said, if I can get them cheaper in a H&S auction, I'm all for it.

To be honest, I don't think most Heritage buyers check the Huggins and Scott auctions much, and you will get a much better return just listing on ebay, fees and all.

That said, if I can get them cheaper in a H&S auction, I'm all for it.

Many will be lotted for our Jan/Feb Auction while the wax will probably be consigned through the storefront portion of the company. I would agree with you in times past that there were some absolute steals from Heritage in our auctions. However, we are gradually carving our niche and a lot of modern insert collectors/dealers are taking notice.

That's very true! Our auctions are often filled with lots from the collection's of those who have recently passed. Helping grieving widows and family members comes with the job.
