Report: Griffey returning for one more year
Although the Seattle Mariners say they have no official confirmation at this point, the Seattle Times is reporting this morning that Ken Griffey Jr. has reached agreement on a deal that will bring him back for one more season.

Larry Stone of the Times has this blog report saying an announcement will likely be coming later this morning.

Ken Griffey Jr.Griffey, who turns 40 on Nov. 21, hit .214 with 19 home runs and 57 RBIs while splitting time with Mike Sweeney as the Mariners' designated hitter in 2009.

At the end of last season, Griffey said he would like to return if the Mariners wanted him back, so the news doesn't come at a huge shock. But it likely will raise further debate over whether the team should be looking to get younger or if Griffey's presence outweighs his declining offensive production.

My take is that Griffey handled a reduced role in surprisingly good fashion last year and can help a young club with his veteran counsel, even if he isn't the feared slugger of old.

And it doesn't hurt to have a guy on your bench with some left-handed pop, as he continued to display last year.

Given Griffey's willingness to accept a small salary and whatever role the Mariners need, this one seems like a no-brainer. The man is the best player in franchise history. Having him remain part of that franchise is nothing but a positive.

Cool! One season closer to 3,000 hits. Go Griff. I hope he has a "breakout" season at 41 so he can get another contract and push for 10,000 ABs, 3,000 hits, 661 HRs and 2,000 RBIs.

I have no issues with this. The guy is TREMENDOUS for the clubhouse (and keeps Ichiro happy). I actually would love for them to resign Sweeney and use the Griffey/Sweeney Dual-DH action again this season!

What on earth happened to Branyan? He was mashing last season and disappeared from the lineup.

He was having back issues for about the last two months and basically missed the last month of the season. I think it was back issues...which with his swing, doesn't surprise me one bit.

Exactly. Griffey has had a great career but he's really not much more than a merchandising option at this point. I like Griffey but he just needs to walk into the sunset and not look back.

Actually he is A LOT more than that to the clubhouse...especially to a clubhouse that was in serious disarray after the 2008 season. Unless you're in Seattle, you probably have no idea what he and Sweeney did for that clubhouse this year.

One more year of it for a lot of the younger guys is not a bad thing.

Then he should become a assistant coach instead of taking up a roster spot and preventing a younger player from actually contributing to the club. One that can possibly play a full season and not destined for the DL.

Have you seen the Mariners farm-system? Those that are MLB ready are few and far between.

I think it is awesome! Can I get a woo hoo  another year of cards during his playing days! BTW he is turning 40 on the Nov. 21 so if he works out and gets himself in shape he could have a good season. He just needs to lay off the junk food and couch sitting

He's a DH. It's not like he is taking a roster spot from a young outfielder. They don't bring up young DHs.

Exactly, and the fact that he's only a part-time player. It's pointless to bring up a young guy and have him sit on the bench 50% of the time. Those young guys need regular playing time.

Good point, and I forgot that they had him as a DH most of the year.

I was kind of hoping he would sign with the Yankees to take Matsui's place as their DH. It would have given him a better opportunity to get a ring, IMHO.
