Also, someone asked about Branyan...

First baseman Russell Branyan, whose breakthrough season ended in a breakdown, has declined a one-year offer to stay with the Seattle Mariners.

I for one think it may be time for him to hang it up.

+1 !!! 5 years ago! He is a below average player now and has been for 5 years. And the 5 years before that he was barely average! He has been living on "the Kid" reputation for over 10 years! His career stats will look great, but if you break them down by season it will not be as impressive. Kinda like Pete Rose or Tony Perez.

It was a 1 year deal with an option for a 2nd year. He wants a GUARENTEED 2 year deal. He said that would be accepted if they offer it

Seattle Mariners- "a committment to selling tickets."

they are going to have a young team. its going to be a big boost having a guy like him on it.
a few have asked why not just sign him as a coach, but hes not going to do it yet.. he says he wants to spend time with his kids, so its either play or retire.

funny how the mariners were the ones to believe in him, and he says he wanted so badly to stay with the team all year, and now he just wants $$$

This may also help the Yankees keep Matsui.

There were rumors he'd make a good fit as their fulltime DH.

He loses this posibility as a bargaining chip.

Don't hold back, Keith. Tell us how you really feel.

jeff (nyc)

Keith,I just don't understand the rationale of throwing away $2M and a roster spot on Griffey Jr. just because he was good ten years ago.

Klaw (1:11 PM)

But you don't understand how much he means to that clubhouse, and that city. Oh, wait, I had my chat software set to "stupid." It's fixed now. Griffey sucks. Roster spots have value and blowing one on a REPEAT nostalgia trip is a terrible idea. And I do not believe for a moment that the same front office that figured out how to overhaul the defense and turn that team into a run-prevention force in one offseason without spending much money is the same one that thinks it's a good idea to waste a few million and a spot on a guy who needs to pick up a copy of "Retiring Gracefully for Dummies."

I don't think it is the money...I believe teams only want to sign him for only a year with the whole hernia/disc thing and he is declining the 1 year offers. If we agreed to 2 I'm am highly certain it would have not been an issue with him staying. Just my 2 cents :)
