Hamels plunks Harper... later admits he did it on purpose.

Ask Bob Gibson what he would have done?

So many players crouch over the plate now with a ton of armor on their arms, that they are looking for a cheap way to get hit..

Ask Bob Gibson if he would have hit a player unprovoked and for absolutely no reason at all. Im sure he would tell you no..

Cole, really? Really?

Fantastic! Now that is old school isn't it Cole? Not to mention anyone with the nickname Hollywood who spends two hours a day on his hair - also very old school. Give me a break.

+1

Cole is about as Old School as a pair of yoga pants. The rules of being "old school" is similar to the rules of fight club: You don't talk about being old school. You just go out and do it and shrug when you're asked and say "I was just trying to pitch inside and it got away from me."

Or, you get hit in the first inning, take an extra base on a single, steal home on a ******* pitcher, and then later, drag a bunt up the first base line. Too bad Harper missed on that drag bunt and it wasn't closer to the first base line, which was no doubt his intention. "C'mon Cole..." field that bunt as Harper is charging at you...

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm still glad he's pitching for my team.

I said this back when he got the call. He was going to get nailed from someone, since he likes to stand there and watch his homeruns (minors0 and even blow a kiss to a pitcher one time he hit one. Now I know he did not hit a Dinger yet....but Cole was just welcoming him to the bigs. I see Harper getting bruised more in the future and on purpose too.

This was so far in the past.
He's apologized and has matured greatly. It's shown.
Why can't people get over it??

I think this may have been a team decision, or at the very least a small group decision. They wanted to send a message and Hamels was the messenger. It reminds me of the Nolan Ryan/Robin Ventura situation where the team decided that they were sick and tired of the Ryan tough guy act and they weren't going to be intimidated anymore. So they decided that the next guy that got drilled would charge the mound and clear the benches. Ryan ends up plunking Ventura, the nicest guy around who had never charged a mound, so he felt like he had to charge the mound and promptly got a classic ass kicking.

Maybe Hamels acted alone, but it doesn't seem like his style. If it was a team decision, he hit Harper the right way by not head hunting and he did it at the beginning of the game so one of his teammates didn't have to take the retaliation beaning.

Great last point there (and another reason why I like the NL).

All of the stuff being posted about Hamels here is hilarious. The guy has made it very easy and enjoyable to make fun of him. But I LOVE that he welcomed Harper with a beaning. It IS old school baseball, and (regarding a point made above) I really think Bob Gibson would agree. Hamels went up in my eyes, and so did Harper with the way he responded on and off the field.

The whole thing is great baseball and just fantastic!

Except it's not old school. Old school would be hitting him after he did something to deserve it. Harper did no such thing, except play hard (which is old school).

To channel Mike Rizzo, this was fake tough---fake old school---by a misguided pretty boy pitcher that rides a carousel with the safety strap latched, carries a pomeranian (or whatever dog that is) around in a backpack, wears affliction shirts but wouldn't throw a punch because it would mess up his manicure, and likes to pose with random interracial childen in a bed.

Philly fans had plenty of the "soft" and "pretty boy" criticisms in Cole's early years. You don't hear that anymore because he pitches and acts differently now. Mike Rizzo and message board jockeys can bluster all they want, but I bet Cole is getting a lot of respect in his clubhouse and that's all that really matters.

Cole's thrown plenty of punches. Guess you never heard of the Razzles incident.
