Harold Baines

I was just looking over this guys stats after watching a special on the top 9 DH in MLB history. Baines had 2,800 hits in his career, 384 homeruns, and 1,600 rbis. The guy seems like he has all the stats for Hall of Fame consideration yet he only recieved 6% of the 75% needed in voting?

Why is he not in the Hall of Fame?

Even though that would seem like a logical answer I still don't know if 500 would have locked him up. I am torn on that lol. :lol:

I was a pretty big Baines fan but even I don't think he's a HOFer.

Baines being a DH for most of the second half of his career hurt him and will hurt others in the future. It kept a good bat in the lineup and bad knees on the bench, but I bet it'll also keep him out of the Hall.

Of course, that didn't stop guys like Rice, Andre Dawson, and Gary Carter...

Because he was good. He wasn't great.

Of course, that didn't stop guys like Rice, Andre Dawson, and Gary Carter...

Catchers always get extra consideration for their position. But since Dawson, Rice, Perez and Rizzuto got in, I can easily see Baines, McGriff, Dave Parker, Rusty Staub and Al Oliver sliding in via the Veterans Committee.

Dawson and Carter are both HOFers in my mind.

I'm too young to judge Rice accurately but folks I listen to said he was that dominant in his time, so I have no problem with him being in. But I never heard anyone describe Baines as anything close to dominant.

Baines was never the best at any given time during his career which hurts his cause.He was a good player but not a great one.I would Trammell and Lee Smith in before him.

Gary Carter? He was a great all around catcher, why would you put his name on this list.

If it was not for two work stoppages Baiens was involved in during his career he may have gotten the 3,000 hits needed to make the HOF. I am a big fan, but agree he is not HOF worthy

Baines never finished in the top 5 in the MVP voting (9th was his highest).

Baines was only a semi-dominant player for 4-5 years, and those were at the beginning of his career.

He had 0 200-hit seasons and only topped .320 once, and .310 just 4 times. Couple that with: He never broke 30 HRs in a season.

He only played the field for 2 all-star seasons.
