Just wondering. My wife actually grabbed me a rack pack(42 cards) yesterday when she went shopping but I have to say I am unimpressed.Very bland looking. The inserts are kinda cool but have a Score look to them.Is the hobby much better?Should I even worry about trying to get a base set together?

If you are talking about the base Panini brand then that is not a surprise, as it's really about as low-end as you can get. Though it makes sense since it is so cheap and seems geared toward retail and being kid-friendly.

I guess it may be cool to put together and hold on to since it's the first Panini base brand set, but like you said I'd agree that it is pretty much the same as like a score or topps base set..so if you like to put those together and want a cheap way to get all the rookies then it's a good idea.

I busted a box of the Rookies & Stars that was just released this week. They are pretty ugly...I did hit a Blake Griffin Clippers Patch auto though!

So it is considered the first actual Panini set?I mean...I see their brand name on a few other odds and ends but I kinda get what your saying.I suppose that is reason enough to snag it.I know it certainly doesn't cost much and you can't beat the price. The thing I am curious about is why the packs always end up being cheaper if you buy the rack variety. The blasters yeild an extra pack for about $3 cheaper than if you purchased the same amount of loose packs. And if you do the math on the rack packs...you actually get more than both the blasters or the single packs.I didn't expect to hit any worthwhile inserts so as for this set...the rack packs are where its at.

Panini purchased Playoff & since then it's been business as usual. If you ask me they haven't brought a single new invitation to the card market, not one. My question is how they swooned the NBA away from Topps & UD when they were both very good at what they did. They had no cardmaking experience, no new innovations to bring to the table, and hell they're not even an American company. So what gives? Very disappointing from my standpoint, I give the NBA an f- on this move. They'd be getting the same products if they had just given Playoff the NBA license they wanted so badly. I rank Panini's lack of creativity right up there with Razor's. Nothing innovative has come since the Playoff purchase, nothing. The die-hard hoops collectors in my area are sick about this for the most-part, they hate the Panini stuff so far.

Of course, what do you expect from a sticker maker?

Okay...went to wally world a few minutes ago and purchased 4 of the rack packs. What do you guys figure a DeJuan Blair auto card out of this set would go for?I suppose he is a pretty good pull.I read a little bit about him in sports illustrated last year but can't remember how highly touted he was.

Well technically I think Prestige was the "first release". I know in other sports though like baseball a couple products may come out first, but then a lot of people (myself included) will pick up some base brand Topps to put the base set together....so that's why I was saying it's the first base Panini set. (don't know if that makes sense or not lol)

And the Blair auto is a great pull. Auto's are only 1 per hobby box, so lord knows what the odds are to get one in the rack packs. Blair actually fell to the second rd., but he's been getting significant playing time with the Spurs - avg. like 7 pts. 7 reb. I believe, so he's been like a top 10 rookie in terms of production so far.

Cool.I get you.Its hard to explain but it makes sense. As for the Blair...Yeah...I looked it up on ebay last night and saw they had one at a BIN for $20.00.So...not worth a fortune but certainly a decent pull out of a rack pack.I hadn't heard much about the guy after the college season wound down. The only guy I have been keeping track of was Flynn since I pulled one of his autos and that guy from NC.

As an Elite fan in the other sports, I'm kinda stoked for it.

Some has hit early, but most places will have on Tues. Usually, I go after a bunch of Status of one guy. Can't afford Curry, so I'll have to figure out a cheaper guy to chase.
