(mostly nonsensical) response to inquiry received by someone on blowout:

Hi, thanks for bidding. I do not own a card shop, but work with a couple of master distributors to buy the overstock cases that card shops are forced to buy from the manufacturers in order to maintain the ability to buy direct. The dealers are forbidden by the manufacturesr from selling online at such low prices. The release date of this product is 1/19 and I get my cases 3 to 4 days later to ship out.
Thanks again

This is pretty much what I thought was happening.

Not sure I follow this logic, so why exactly are they both losing money and leaving money on the table?

An old LCS did the same thing with his suppliers, Every Tuesday and Thursday the "blowout table" was filled with current and wax within a year old at cost. Was just returned stuff and product other shops couldnt pay on. Makes perfect sense to create an account under your wife or girlfriends name to sell the product. They're doing it for cashflow and like the response states, To keep the level of buying at a certain level. Chris says the stuff is dropped shipped, That even supports the theory even more.

What you are saying makes sense if you are buying under market to sell at market. There is no where in the world a person is buying this much product to sell at these prices to make a profit, especially when they could easily be making, way, way more money just selling to other dealers and not have to deal with ebay fees/ shipping etc.

This is actually VERY common...I use to work for a company that was a supplier of Dell Laptops but there was a stipulation; he HAD to order a specific volume every quarter, or lose his status as a distributor, so every quarter he placed a sizable order on laptops. I was also involved with this as my company provided the Dell disk drives so if any failed or had warranty issues, we would supply the optical drives.

In actuality, it was not because he was making a whole lot of money - he wasn't - what was more critical to him was the BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP he would be able to maintain with such a powerful company in the Austin area. This relationship allowed him access to more product that he was much more interested in.

For example, did you know that you could buiy nearly new Laptops and Desktops from Dell (ever buy something brand new and return it because of buyer's remorse? ) and the cost is a fraction of what it would cost brand new, although if you and I were staring at it, it LOOKED brand new, box is new, and the instructions still plastic sealed, and you had an opportunity to buy a $3000 gaming desktop for $500, wouldn't you want to? Well, Dell has a program like this, however it's only open to a select number of vendors and the only way to get into this purchasing program is through a sole person in Dell that says "yes" or "no."

So what this card shop owner is probably following the same logic and so what Mama bear has to say is very believable imo.

I am sure "mama bear" is a business and has the ability to write the loss off. Probably a part of the distributor, Not sure if they went that route. If thats the case, They would be allowed to write it off, A shifting loss is nothing new. They are not looking at money lost though, Just the ability to keep on par with manufacture requirements. Also keeping the cash flow going, That cash is worth more in hand then sitting on a 30 day listing on ebay.

So who is buying at Mamabear's price?

Blowout is pre-selling them for $1849. Auctions are ending for Mamabear at around $1050.

Only thing is you won't get them until Feb 7 - Feb 11.

Is it possible that she's short selling?

yes.
