I have a bad habit of not wanting to sell stuff when I first pull it cause I like it. And by the time i do decide to sell it, it's worth so much less than if I just sold it right away. And I do this over and over and over....

ANYONE who opens wax, regardless of your purpose, is gambling. So therefore, that aspect has always been gambling, even back to the tobacco era. I don't care if you call yourself a collector, if you are cracking a wax pack to try to get singles to build your set, by definition you are gambling. It is true that true collectors don't open wax, but just because you open wax doesn't exclude you from being a true collector.

I open certain wax products for the pure gamble of it - I want to crack the latest cool product so I can get a big hit, and if I do, that is icing on the cake. On the other hand, I open other wax products for my personal collection. This by definition is still gambling, but I am doing it for my collection. There are certain cards out there that you simply can't buy; they are obtainable only if you pull it. So indirectly, I as a collector am gambling to pull a certain card to keep for my collection. If I happen to pull cards I don't want to keep in my collection, I sell it, either immediately, or down the line. If I can't see myself keeping a card my entire life, I end up selling it. That doesn't make me a gambler, per se. Of course, those cards that I choose to keep can change as my collecting habits evolve.

Furthermore, just because you don't build sets doesn't exclude you from being a true collector. I think building sets are a pain in the arse. The worst part about it is having to pay an obscene amount of money for a card/player that you don't give a donkey's arse about. Besides, there is very little challenge in building base sets - it's time consuming, boring, and a waste of my time. It's too easy. I can buy a hundred "base" sets with a blink of the eye - what kind of challenge is that? I'm a collector, but not a collector of junk.

I guess you can call me a hybrid. An arrogant hybrid.

They can be a pain but with all the sp's and ssp's and stuff, it can be fun and worth some money. Also, it's cool to put together all of the insert sets too. Within reason of course.
