Told this story many times, but I bought 2 Hank Blalock BC RCs right before the 2002 season started. He had been pure fire for the past year, getting press for hitting 2 cycles in a week in the minors, and generally being a huge hitting prospect. Anyway, bought them for $25 each, BV, but they had been going for $125 apiece on ebay. Remember, this was before smartphones and many dealers still weren't in on ebay and the way prices could swing daily, not just on the first Tuesday of the month. I figured I'd hold them for an extra week, as he had made the team out of ST and was sure to make a big splash, pushing their prices even higher. Sure enough, that was the week he forgot how to hit, fell back to earth, and yadda yadda yadda, I still have that pair of cards today.
I'm pretty good about selling cards I buy intending to sell, even though I typically buy rookies with the mindset for a 3-year period for "ripening." I've probably made more than I've lost in the last 15 years or so, from Adrian Beltre and Lance Berkman to Yasiel Puig and Nick Castellanos (who I actually haven't made a dime on, better get on that). But then there was my Cody Haerther stash, my Pedro Lopez stash, my Matt Moore stash which is turning into a very long-term hold, and my Justin Upton Bowman Sterling Black Refractor #1 /25, which I'm still waiting to cash in on.
With ST coming up, I really, really, really need to start scanning and listing.
Two freakin' words: Jeremy Jeffress.
Up in smoke
"hey Shaggy pass the baggy so I can roll Scooby another doobie" i see this bumper sticker nearly everday on the way to work. Laugh everytime.
Although I haven't sold any major parts of my Braun collection ... I know I'll be taking a beating on it when I do
