I'm not sure where the sentiment comes from that a winner of the ROY needs to have a good career to back it up. It's the Rookie Of The Year award, not the Rookie of the First-Few Years award.

The award really kind of means nothing to me unless someone has a largly-impactful season a la Braun, Piazza, Trout, Pujols, etc. Some years are just down years for rookies in MLB.

Like the year Earl Williams won for the NL, Willie Montanez came in second, and no one else recieved any votes at all.

I don't think the sentiment is that most guys that busted were undeserving (except in some cases where the stats bear it out), but when a guy wins the ROY award, there is certainly the expectation at the time that they're going to go on to at least a quality MLB career. So looking back it's interesting to see the number of guys that flamed out. I specifically remember seeing Hamelin's #s as a kid and thinking he'd be the next great slugger.

Ironically, right before I clicked on this thread, the "looking for joe charbanue" post was directly under.
