He's an alright dude, and like the op somewhere above, his appearance is about the same as a generalization of the majority of our hobby. There are many exceptions, and I do include myself in that without trying to be negative, but for the most part our hobby is socially awkward people who like to take solice in their collections. That is by no means a bad thing, it just happens. Regardless of what you look like, we're all in the collecting world together. We all get looked at the same way when someone finds out what we do in our spare time lol. We collect baseball cards, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I trust in Olds more than the reputations of other people in the hobby - seems like a quaint guy who is a collector at heart.

Every time the Olds bashing starts - it's the OP that lights the fire. Jeff, we get it, you think he's a fat man who doesn't have sex. You're no Brad Pitt yourself.

I sent him an email once about some minor lg issued cards, and he got back to me pretty fast. Funny thing was the message's font/letter size was huge.

I never said a word about his appearance until Gilmo brought it up. My only comment was that this was the closest he'd come to a woman in ages. Whether he's repugnant or ruggedly handsome is irrelevant.

Well now I feel bad.

Fact still remains, he doesn't put together a good magazine. But if he's a nice guy, which apparently he is, I'm not going to bag on his hair or his ability to get attractive blondes. Not like I have any room to talk.

He is sadly one of the few that has power to change things in this industry. He refuses to do so -- whether he lacks the intelligence or courage to do so. Therefore, I don't have an ounce of respect for the man. What he looks like is, as I have said, irrelevant.

And, yes, Chris, I know you're lurking here. Hi. GIve yourself a people's eyebrow for me.

It is sad what Beckett has become. Once upon a time they had slews of advertisers and were not afraid to be critical of a product if it was not up to *****. Now, with so much of their ad revenue coming from Topps and Panini, if they say something bad about their products, Beckett is sunk and Olds is out of a job. I cannot remember the last time I have seen a box busters and heard the words "disappointed" or "not good". Everything is "great" and "fun to bust".

Back to the Olds looks issue: Yes, he does look like a South Park character. Yes, his looks do make him a easy target, but there are many in this hobby that would probably make him look like Brad freakin' Pitt.

To be fair, not much has even been said about his appearance in this thread. But yeah, usually it's much worse and it's always uncalled for. This isn't Entertainment Tonight where we rate looks and gossip. It's a trading card hobby. I'd bet 80% or higher of the membership here looks like Olds. Hell, 80% or more of society looks like Olds.

How many here have met Chris? Maybe a handful. I have meet him twice, the 2 Nationals in Baltimore. Very nice guy. Never understood all the bashing he gets.

I think most of the issue is jealousy. Who wouldn't want to play with baseball cards all day everyday.

From my conversations with James McCay (before he went off the deep end), he was allegedly offered a job with Beckett as well but refused it for the pay.

Playing with baseball cards is great if it provides you with a substantial income. If not. . . perhaps not.

I've expressed my reasons for disdain.

This. I've talked to him once and he seems like an alright guy.

I think some people think he has more power than he actually does. I follow him on the twitters and he has a good knowledge of the hobby and is also a collector.

He is essentially the voice of Beckett.

Beckett is, unfortunately, the leading hobby publication.

As the voice of the leading hobby publication, what he says would carry a lot of weight with those who are not as educated in this hobby. Unfortunately, he says mostly the wrong things.

His salary is also none of your concern.

Mr. Olds is a big boy (too easy, I won't go there) and can defend himself. While his and your incomes are both none of my concern, I was responding to AIC that poeple may be jealous of the fact that he can play with baseball cards all day. My point was that I had 2nd hand, someone insane information, that Beckett didn't pay a whole lot, and that while playing with baseball cards is great, a job that allows one to do so but barely pays anything is far from something to be jealous of.
