First, there's been some amazing pick-ups by board members here recently. I've missed being on the boards over the last 3 months as I've been swamped at work and my wife and I added our second child during this time. As some of you may know, I've been putting together a 1955 Topps Set graded PSA 6 or better. I'm halfway there, but i've been running into some obstacles lately adding cards to the set. One, they aren't showing up and two, if they do pop up on Ebay, the starting price on most 6's are about $5 more than most ending prices. I've been picking up more 7's here recently just to fill the void :)

With this being said, i'm thinking of starting a second set on the side, any sport. I'm open to putting together a raw set or even another PSA graded set depending on the cost. If i'm putting together a PSA set, i would like to stay to a set under 300 cards.

So, any suggestions or recommendations and why?

Matt,

Depends how far back you want to go - I've just started a t205 set. Commons in PSA 4 are available for between $40-50 which is pretty reasonable. The set has I believe 208 cards in total (there will be some that are expensive like Cobb and some of the error variations). They look great too - awaiting the arrival of my first batch - will post scans then.

When I was finishing up my 55' set I was experiencing the same as you are now except I was trying for psa 7 or above. Once you get closer to completion of that set you will find that the cards that you need will show up less frequent on ebay. There were many times when I thought I wanted to do a side project. In fact that is when I first started picking up T205 Boston Rustlers cards. Sometimes its better to start another project to take your mind off the frustration of trying to find and buy the remaining cards in your main focus set. As long as you don't loose your way you should be fine.

When you are choosing what your second project should be, take into consideration whether or not you can finish it or will it lead you down the same "stall" towards the end of the project. The fact that you start picking up cards on your second project will actually satisfy that thirst that you are wanting from you first project. I know it sounds weird but it makes you feel like you are still moving forward.

Eventually the cards that you need for your first project will show up on ebay. Even though you might have to sometimes bite the bullet with the cost. Its either pay that price now or wait another 4 months or so until it shows up again. I know that is difficult to understand but once you get desperate enought you will find yourself hitting that BIN/ or pulling the trigger on that bid for a little more then you are willing to pay for. In the long run it will be worth it because you will have the card that you need and you will be one more card closer to finishing your set.

Its a tricky business collecting cards. In my opinion though its always worth it in the long run! I might suggest the 1948 bowman set. Its only 48 cards so that isn't so bad. Good luck in whatever direction that you take.

Happy collecting!
