Hobby did you knows?

Those who have been around the hobby a while will recall that the hobby has gone through many changes and there have been some interesting and different moments over the years.

Something mentioned in a different post sparked the idea for this set.

Did you know:
In 2001 Upper Deck put out a set called Upper Deck Rookie Update which was an update set for a large number of the releases that year. Cards like Pujols and Teixeira's SPx RC Auto's were not actually inserted in SPx, and were actually found in this set.

Anyone else have some obscure hobby "did you know" to offer?

They did the same thing in 2005...better known than what they did with 2001, but both years had stellar RC crops.

2005 Upper Deck Ultimate had redemptions that didn't expire for like 5 years almost. HAS to be one of the longest periods in which you could redeem a card.

Fleer also did it in 2001.They put updates to 5 different sets in Platinum RC Edition series 2.

2003 DLP had an "update" with cards over 5 or so sets.

I think Traded/Update sets should be brought back and only include trades and missed RCs (late call ups). Never know. May be another 1984 fleer update to pop up again.

They did the same thing in 2000 as well.

Sp Authentic, SPx, Black Diamond, and Ultimate Victory were all done as an update set with the Team USA players from 2000, Roy Oswalt, Ben Sheets, Brad Wilkerson, etc.

UD got it's name from a California Baseball card shop.

Aaron's 1957 Topps card is a reverse negative, something Hank didnt know untill several years ago (he thought he pulled a prank on the photographer)

The only error cards ever corrected in a Bowman Draft product were both from 1992 (Drew Henson and Brett Myers)

The first boxed Topps Traded Set was not numbered with a suffix, they continued where the reg. 1981 set left off.

When the 1952 Topps reprint sets were produced, collectors actually thought it would lower the value of the original 1952 cards.

There were a million of each 1987 Topps card produced and by 1991, over four million of each card was made.

In 1990, Topps produced a George Bush Sr. card featuring him in his Yale uniform and presented it to him. Topps said they would not show up in packs. They did.

The Pujols 2001 bowman chrome autograph rookie card can NOT be pulled from a pack of 2001 bowman chrome - they were ALL redemptions.

2007 UD Spectrum had Rc redemption card's inserted at 1 per case & there was a running vote on UD.com for collector's to vote on which rookie's from that year they wanted UD to produce (I think there were 20 of them or so?). Anyhow, I'm not sure the print run on these as I couldn't find them listed anywhere the last few times I looked (seems as if no one has heard of them)...They are an extension of the 2007 Spectrum set (as thier numbered as part of the set). It was a neat idea but it's so obscure that it tells me it wasn't much of a hit with collector's! :lol:

On a side note, I ended up buying 5 redemption's off of Ebay & redeemed them in 07; later receiving 4 unknown rc's & a Dice-K (but it's not listed anywhere & I've never seen one for sell on Ebay).

In order to get around Topps's gum monopoly, 1960 Leaf packs had marbles, and 1963 Fleer packs had cookies. Neither ploy proved successful, obviously.

There was a thread on one of the boards years ago about the oldest piece of pack-gum anyone had ever eaten. I always wondered if there were still any Fleer cookies out there, and what they would taste like today. I'd like to see BGS slab one of those.

And Pedro Borbon's 1970 Topps card says his hobby is cockfighting. Just want to see if the fudge-filter will catch it.

A late season release back in 1999, Upper Deck Ultimate Victory was mostly retail even though there was some
limited hobby boxes. These cards were printed in two different runs, the base set and then the rookie cards, these
cards were poorly printed with many of them off cut and the foil chipping. It was a small set, but included super
rookies like Beckett, Soriano, Ankiel and Burrell. Even today it remains one of the toughest cards to get in mint
condition.

Which is insane when you think of all of the crazy-good pitchers the Mets have had over the years.

I know the Padres are one of the other two. Third would probably be the Rays, though I can't be certain.

They did the same thing in 2005...better known than what they did with 2001, but both years had stellar RC crops.

Same for 2000. The Zito and Oswalt RCs from SPX were in the update.

The Ankiel was the hot card, and then of course the Soriano. I think the Ankiel 1/1 parallel sold for a very high amount.
