Why would you do that? The seller knew what the card was.

Sorry, I just picked one of the common Trading Card message board lines.

I almost went with,

"Wow, that looks like a BGS 9.5, send that puppy in ASAP!"

He took the $500 that was offered to him. If he wanted more he could've asked. Sucks for him.

Concur.

I put no culpability on the buyer. Even if no one had told the seller about the price before hand, as an adult with the mental faculty to do so, it would be his responsibility to determine what he considers to be a fair market value and how much he would be willing to accept for his card. The fact that he was even told before hand about the value just adds to the buyer having done nothing wrong in this situation.

I held it in my hand and I know the difference between a Topps chrome /25 and a bowman chrome /5

Actually, your original thread said you did NOT hold it in your hand, and I quote: "Last week at the show in the ATL, a customer came by and told me he pulled a Homser Red Refractor Auto /5 from a box and asked what they go for. I asked to see it, but he didn't have it with him. I told him that was a HUGE pull and it would probably go for $3-$4K easy."

So don't get all pissy acting like I insulted your card intelligence.

Actually, he also said in his first post...

"...around and one of the dealers there asked if I wanted to see something awesome he just bought...and he whips out the Homser red.."

So at least we could assume he actually saw it before making this thread.

I stand corrected. My apologies

Better question is why he didn't want to deal with you the person who estimated its value at 10x's what he accepted. I know if I where selling anything if a person says that its worth 5,000 I would return to them first when selling.

I wish I knew. Maybe it's because this guy is older than me and owns a shop (I'm only 39 and don't do this for a living). Maybe he just didn't believe it was so valuable. Maybe the other guy told him no way it's worth that much and showed him a Beckett and said they don't price these things so low (and failed to show him the "BV" of a gold auto). I just don't understand the guy.

Were the Topps Chrome Red Autos usually in pretty good condition? I'd say $500 was fair...

Reminds me of the last show I was at.... Older gent that didn't collect walked in with a Mickey Mantle and went to the beckett booth of all places to have ti authenticated... he told a dealer at a table I was at that he was going to look to sell it and the dealer asked what condition it was in. The older man thought for a few minutes and pointed to one of the dealers cards and said it was in a little better condition than that one and had no creases (he pointed at a PSA 4.5). The dealer told him that he'd given the gent $1,000 for it....

Hell.. the cheapest 4 on EBAY is listed as $12,000.... sadly I wasn't able to catch up with the guy before I lost sight of him in the crowd. Don't know what he ever sold it for.

Was it a Bowman Chrome /5 or Topps Chrome /25 Mantle?? Big difference.
