Like title says, Im not looking to start a fight on the boards but how can people still think that Jeter is over rated?

Im very curious how people still say this when you consider the facts:

Most hits in the HISTORY of Baseball by a SS
A few more days he will have the most hits in the HISTORY of the Yanks
On pace for 3000 hits in less than 2 years
Has more hits at his age than Rose did (though this could be double checked)
Four rings in which he played MAJOR ROLES in
.317 lifetime
.309 postseason
10 time all star
7 times in top 10 for MVP voting (counting this year)
Add to all this his leadership and career numbers

Without saying "He's a Yankee", how can someone say he is over rated?

Howabout this? He's overrated because people continue to ask, despite the fact that they know every reason already, because the SAME argument takes place in every thread/discussion, but they just can't accept it.

I think "overrated" can really mean 2 things, and thats where problem starts.

overrated should mean that this persons skills doesnt match the opinion out on him

but a lot of people these days say overrated as part of that... but mostly as-overrated=you suck.

If youre rating him as a true yankee great than he is overrated. he just cant compare to gehrig+ruth etc..

If youre talking about a guy who has great leadership + contact, then his rating is about right.

his defense would be a good example of being O.R. ... as many still consider it glove glove, but it is very weak when you break it down.

When you dislike somebody or their team, then the value of their accomplishments diminish. You find a reason to knock them down. You point out their every little mistake and do not acknowledge their achievements.

Then you hear all of the talk and praise going their way. You hate it. You find a way to shoot it down. Once you don't believe what is said, they aren't living up to the hype = overrated.

Think about somebody or some team you can't stand. Make sure you have a star player in mind. Odds are, you think he is overrated, garbage, or something along those lines.

I agree, I've never really understood the overrated comments. Every single thing posted above describes a 1st ballot hall of fame caliber player which is exactly what Jeter is.

People say he's overrated due to the teams he plays on. Year after year he has great hitters hitting around him, so that always makes someone better, but the fact is this....

...regardless of who is hitting behind or in front him, he produces.

On the defensive side of the ball, he's VERY overrated. He's not a great defensive player, but the guy does what he's supposed to do on the offensive side of the ball.

He's not a power hitter, he's not the fastest guy, he's not the greatest defensive player, but the guy hits like no one's business.

Averaging 200+ hits per season, 100+ runs, 30+ doubles, 15+ HR's and 80+ RBI's is just damn good. And that's just his regular season stats.

The guy is a damn good ball player. The overrated dubbing comes from the teams he plays on, and the fact that he's not a great defensive player. And this comes from a seriously anti-Yankee person.

In my post I forgot to mention that people also say his glove is over rated.

Really?

Ozzie Smth is a HOF and is considered an amazing fielder.

Ozzie fileding percentage is .978
Jeter's is .976

And now comes the wave of folks that say fielding percentage is an archaic stat that does not prove how good a defender a player is whatsoever. And they'll be right. That said, the guys that pray to the altar of UZR and other new-age stats take things a bit too far in the other direction.

If you watch Jeter play everyday, you know he doesn't get to every ball, but he is by no means a poor defensive shortstop. In fact, this year he's looked as good as he has in a long time at the position.

Tough to make an error if you don't get to the ball.

Strangely enough, this is his best UZR season ever, by far, like bye a HUGE margin, atleast as far back as they go on FanGraphs, to 2002.

Just two quick points.

First, as someone pointed out, he doesn't the range that a better fielding SS has, but he makes the plays on the balls he gets to. Fielding %'s don't take into account a fielder's range, just the errors.

Second, I think he is overrated. Having said that, I wouldn't doubt he's deserving of a first ballot HOF selection. But he's overrated in that some people place him on a Ruthian pedestal.

Pete Rose was overrated too, even though he got more hits than anyone. Ruth is not. Mantle could be. Doesn't mean people think any less of them though, just a little lower than others is all.

I have ALWAYS been amazed by the Jeter haters who cry that he is vastly over rated. Anyone who has accomplished what he has is not over rated. Anyone who is on the verge of passing Lou freaking Gehrig in ANYTHING isn`t overrated. You can hate on Captain Clutch all you want, but the fact of the matter is he produces.
