I started when I saw something on the register that had to do with football. I was 5 or 6. My mother bought me two packs of what we know as 1989 Pro Set. The two cards I latched onto were two somewhat familiar guys. I am not sure if you guys have heard of them but its Jerry Rice and Joe Montana. Ever since then I have been a 49ers fan and collected cards. I have never flip flopped or bandwagon jumped. Now with that said I do route for other teams in the playoffs (because we're usually out of it) but I don't have the passion like I do for the 49ers.

i grew up collecting proline and topps football/baseball... i had binders and binders and binders and boxes of commons lol...

then i stopped around 12

when i was like 19 my mom got me a deuce mcallister game used jersey rookie card and i was shocked they actually put jersey on the card, because right when i was getting out of the hobby the game used bat cards were starting to get heard about but i had never seen one.

Then when i was in the marines the following years i decided it was a good way to stay occupied and to feel closer to home by buying my saints...

Mentioned in another thread, i can remember my Mom buying me packs of 81/82 O-Pee-Chee Hockey cards (and the 81/82 Panini Hockey stickers and album) and continued buying and completing O-Pee-Chee Hockey sets through out the 80s. They only sold Hockey and Baseball cards in Canadian stores back in the early to mid 80's (CFL were around, but hard to get). My first Football cards were bought in Sandpoint, Idaho. Can't remember the year (80's), but they were called "Fleer live action Football", i was hit with the kids in school, as no one owned NFL Football cards (only CFL).

Then in 1988/89, the first Card shop i ever went to opened here in Calgary, called "Olympic City Sports Cards" and he sold everything. All sports and wax of all sports that went back to the 70's. Bought my first Basketball cards from him, 87-88 Fleer. Then of course started buying tons of cards in the 1989-92 "Boom" of Sportscards. 1989-90 Proset Football and Hockey, 89-90 Score Football and Hockey. Then of course the super high end Upper Deck cards. Cards were life back in 89-92, me and a friend even opened up a booth at a popular flea market and sold cards, did really well too. EVERYONE i knew collected back then. Then in around 93/94 started getting out cards, as the market was collapsing do to over production of cards (Also started partying and hanging with girls :) ). I can even remember back in 1991 when the Eric Lindros (Hockey guy) Score RC came out, everyone thought they were gonna be rich off of this card. They thought this would be like a Wayne Gretzky RC in 10 years. I remember me and my "Card partner" saying to each other though, "I own 10 Lindros RCs, you own 15, everyone owns multiples of this card, how is it ever gonna be worth anything?"

Then in 2002, i met a couple of guys at work who were collecting "modern" cards, i was floored, jersey cards, patches, autos. Loved it all. They took me to a card shop and have been hooked again ever since.

Thats my story ;)

Can't say I remember how I got in the first time. I do remember getting a baseball card album with a few packs of cards from my great grandmother. It's really the only memory I have of her still. The album is all torn up and full of junk wax, but it's still a treasured part of my collection.

Like many others, I left the hobby for a while and I was reintroduced to it when I was TDY to Fort Huachuca in late 2007. One of the people taking a class with me collected cards and showed me some fantastic stuff. I mean there were real autographs on the cards! Jersey pieces in them! Man, how cool.
