If it is a case of the remaining cards being way out of your price range, then you have two options:

Give up the hunt and be happy with what you have

Or

Give up the hunt and sell them off

With the first option, there is always the chance that you can pick it up again at some future date. The second option is permanent. It all depends on your personality type, I guess.

There are some insert sets that I am super close to completing, but the remaining cards are both super scarce and super pricey. A couple of the cards on the checklist may not even have been produced and the ones that are "available" are as much as $200. Crazy to me to spend that much on a card. I know that realistically I will never complete the set; can't in good conscience spend that kind of money on cards. However, I will keep my Almost set and be pleased with them.

One set I did complete took me about 15 years to finish. It wasn't so much that the remaining cards were expensive (last couple cards cost about $15-20), it was just that they rarely popped up for sale. I am very happy with the set and it will always be PC.

Don't give up, don't ever give up

That's my rationalization for having 1 player collection and 400 something incomplete sets

I think in some cases, starting with the more pricey cards can be a better way to get into the project. That way the hill won't be so hard to climb.

Very true. I hadn't planned on completing the set when I started. By the time I did, too late!

I started collecting the 2000 Greats of the Game set when it released, picking up a couple boxes and topping out at a Yaz auto for cards. Took 10 years off that project and jumped back in when someone listed the entire set. I picked up a lot of the short prints (Yogi, Yount, Spahn, etc), a handful of the average priced cards you don't see often, but not the biggest fish (Schmidt). Now it's a slow paced trek through the set, but it's not hard to find most of the cards. Just a classic set that I've always wanted. I'm not nuts enough to do one of the real tough sets with /25 or such.

As far as the expensive cards, I think you have to just wait it out. There may be a period near/after Hamels retirement, for example, where the price deflates until he's eligible for the Hall... or maybe he gets injured and gets forgotten.

At worst you can just put the cards on a saved search so that you're not having to put forth much effort.
