I was curious how everyone does sorting. Do you have a certain system to make it easier? I always find it to be a pain and I am slow at it. I will post some pics in this thread of the sorting thing I use.
basketball by location about 8 teams at a time , baseball alpha order and football alpha about 5/6 teams at a time .
I also try to put players in alpha order . I 'll do 2800 count basketball 3200 for others .
I use a card table unless i'm on net then a small box
Numerically, there is a pattern that lets you go pretty quick with normal sets that have triple digit checklists.
1) Sort by the cards facedown by the ones digit in the card number in ten piles 0 through 9. I do two rows of five but I've seen three-three-three with zeroes to the side, which actually seems faster, depending how you are sitting.
2) Stack up all the cards so that the nines are on the bottom, eights on top of nines, etc., up to the zeroes on top while facing up.
3) Sort into ten piles again using the tens digit. If it's a single-digit number, it counts as a zero.
4) Stack them up again but in reverse order so zeroes are on the bottom, ones above them, etc.
5) Sort again into ten piles using the hundreds digit. Again, if it's <100, it counts as a zero.
6) Stack them with the highest hundreds in the bottom when face up.
When you are done, you'll have a fully numerically sorted pile of cards.
on a 350 card set, I make 350 piles and when all the cards are gone, they are in order, only touching them once!
j/k
I sort them into 100s, then 10s, then singles, but if there are only 200 cards, I sort them into 10s to begin with and make 20 piles in my sorting tray that has 28 spots
and when I do team breaks, I sort by team
Depends. If I am building a set, I will sort by 100s typically, unless it is a smaller set, then I go by 10s.
In general, I eventually want everything by player, so most of my stuff is sorted alphabetically, but I am nowhere near done. Some boxes have A-M for example, still all mixed up where some have the individual letters sorted together (All Gs for example) but not in player order.
My vintage are sorted by year, but eventually want them by player.
My Dodger cards are the only exception. They are all pulled out as a lone team and sorted by player.
