I have been looking at Items of players like Aaron Hicks, Casey Kelly, and others that are Razor Exclusives and can't help but wonder how Topps is getting around BG's agreements with these guys. I understand this is an MiLB product and the Auto's are "cuts" but I thought that "exclusive" would mean no other card companies could produce their likeness until the end of the contract. Just wondering if there is something I am missing??

they have the milb license which encompasses all team logos and player likenesses. per razor's contract, i believe the only thing which they do not have rights to is autographs. tristar was able to use "exclusive" players in 2008 as well.

Okay, well if Razor has exclusive rights to the Auto's, how does Hicks have a Cut Auto in Pro Debut?

Because the "cut" was an AFLAC auto signed before the Razor deal.

i remember getting a PM from Brian saying they had the exclusive right to the players' likeness EVEN BASE CARDS. He was very clear about that.

Of course i don't see the PM still in my box, but can you confirm or deny that BG?

They have had Tristar cards all along. Razor had the rights to autographs, and everything outside of the MiLB license. There is no circumventing the MiLB license, even if you sign the player's exclusively. They signed an exclusive autograph agreement, and outside of Tristar, had been the only ones that could make base cards. Now that Topps has that license, they can make the base cards, just not the autos

Still don't understand the Hicks Auto.

We do have an exclusive on base cards, except those rights granted by MLBPA or MiLB by the players belonging to the PA or signing the Uniform player contract (which honestly rips off the players as they get ZERO dollars for being used in minor league products).
In summary, Topps can use them in MiLB products, but not Bowman.

1) I hate how what some of us thought the word "exclusive" meant really isn't what exclusive turned out to be
2) Goofy that players get paid zero (ie the example that BG gave above, HS players playing in the US ARMY game, etc)
3) I love minor league ball

Hicks signed the card on the side, meaning not with a company. Topps cut the card up with the auto part on it and put it in that nice window that you see. Still don't get it? Not to sound like a moron on my part, but there are ways to get around Razor and Topps did it.

1> I always said Tristar would have non-auto cards. I thought it was VERY clear that MiLB licenssee could do non-auto cards.

2> Minor league players are PROS. High School kids are amatuers. Not one penny from the sales of pro debut goes to the players. For a professional product, this doesnt seem fair does it? That is all I was noting.

3> I too love minor league baseball.

He signed it BEFORE (in high school) I did a deal with Aaron.
They had a tough choice to make: cut up a card to make a cut signature or put the aflac card they cut up in 2011 bowman draft.
I guess there are gonna be a few less good aflacs in future products.
I personally wouldnt have wasted the Aflac autos on Pro Debut, but its their business to run as they see fit.

For once, I agree with Brian.

What a waste. Cards are hideous.

Agreed should have waited and inserted the Aflac in a product a few years down the road

short sighted move

Brian, I was curious about this and had never brought it up - Derrik Gibson is slated to be in 2010 Bowman, however I thought he was a Razor Exclusive.

Who knows, maybe they held some back for future release, and now they'll be even more rare due to the frankencuts in Debut? Would be a good way to have the best of both worlds.
