Sure, I have collected Steve Garvey for many years, but it wasn't until around 2000 when the rare and expensive cards really started to get issued in much larger quantities. I have spent a fair amount of money in those 14 years, but nothing close to that level. In this case, Tex is a star type player and with what looks like over 1000 1/1s alone, that collection had to have cost a ton even over the duration of his career. Take your estimate and that is $30-100k in just 1/1 cards!
That isn't necessarily millionaire money over a decade or more, but it isn't chump change.
Ok, first off...Texiera's stuff prior to being in New York was not off the charts price wise. I can't count the times I've looked at other players cards and wished Bagwell stuff was as cheap. Secondly, most people that smoke likely spend $3000-$5000 or more a year on tobacco alone. Over a decade that's a ton of money. So it's definitely possible it's being spent on cards as opposed to another habit without breaking the bank. Plus, I'd say it's hard to believe anyone not collecting Griffey, Ripken, or Ryan...maybe even Frank Thomas...even has $100,000 sunk into a single player collection. Unless they simply buy everything and have multiple dupes and have been at it for years.
It just depends on your budget. A lot of people have an extra $100 a week or so to spend on stuff like this. It just depends on their lifestyle and what they want. I had a friend making $120k a year and he also got a 20k bonus every year too. But he liked living in a two bedroom apartment and drove a Honda civic. He'd bust stuff by the cases. He had an amazing collection just from pulls. Now had he done what others do, and purchased a nice home and a nicer car(that Honda was on it's last leg), he might have not collected as much. But he said the car was fine and he'd buy a new one when he needed it and he'd rather have a place to live with zero maintenance on his part. So he spent tons of money on cards and auto'd memorabilia.
It really just depends on what you want, and what you spend your money on. You don't have to be rich. Trust me, if the truly rich started buying cards, a lot of us would be in trouble.
