I think there are two types in what u want to pull. The realistic and unrealistic. Unrealistically, never since its the typical ruth, gehrig, mantle cut or bat barrel stuff. However, I did pull that exact card I wanted to pull from basketball about a month ago. A derrick rose ultimate collection patch auto version #ed to 10 which was a little more realistic albeit still being a tough pull odds-wise. Dave

I was doing the chase on a 2007 Bowman Chrome Adrian Peterson Auto forever. I went through countless boxes. Never pulled the Peterson or any other A/B level autos.

Ended up buying the Peterson.

A few years ago a buddy and I were talking about what we'd like to pull, and I gave him a list of modern players whose autos I'd love to pull. The top two were Jeter and Pujols. Less than a week later, I pulled a Jeter from a retail blaster for Target. It's deep in my PC.

I dunno' if that applies to this since I didn't specifically buy the box for THAT auto, but I thought it was nice to do so so soon after saying I'd like one.

Only time it happened to me was when I bought a box of 08 Bowman and pulled a Longoria/Price Dual Auto.

I was really hoping to pull it, but was shocked when i did

It has happened twice for me. In 2001 I had just gotten back into collecting and I bought a box of 2001 ud rc update. Being a Cardinals fan I was hoping to pull a Pujols rc. About half way through the box I pulled this:

Then 2 packs later these were in the same pack:

In 2007 I busted a box of Allen & Ginter. Missing out on the 2006 product, I wanted to pull a rip card. After seeing the sale sheet on this I told my wife if I bought a box with my luck I would hit the Dog auto instead of a real player.
Opened the box and sure enough the box topper was:
# 32/50

My last 2 packs of the box however I hit these:

and inside of that was this:

I was mad when I hit the Dog auto, but was happy 3 days later when I sold it for $550

I got the lcs to order me a box at $129 one month before the redemption expired. She let me buy by the pack for about three weeks. Well I got down to five packs and in the last pack I screamed like a school girl. Mailed it out the next moring next day air and one week later this showed up.

I've done it three times, all nonsport type cards.

1. Years ago bought a box of Topps American Pie, hoping for the Marilyn Monroe swatch card. Bingo!

2. Bought a box of Allen and Ginter, hoping for the Bruce Lee swatch. Ka Pow!

3. Bought a box of Star Trek Animated hoping for a Shatner or Nimoy autograph. Zingo, got the Shatner!

It's only happened to me once. I had seen this card on ebay and bought two boxes of 2002 UD Vintage at one of the Sun-Times shows, certainly not expecting to pull one but more because I knew these cards were in the set:

Despite it being a completely unrealistic expectation to have a chance to hit one out of two boxes (it was really more of a wish), there it was, halfway through the first box. As it turned out it was an SP with less than 20 believed to have been made so the odds were even longer than I imagined.

Once

I bought one pack of 2006 Leaf Limited football hoping for the Vince Young Limited Cuts patch/auto /30.

Sure enough, I pulled it #'d 10/30 - VY's jersey number

Happened once for me, but I raraely expect anything specific from wax, so it was a really lucky pull.

Early this year I bought a box of 05 Topps Chrome Update for, well, too much. But I didn't care, I just wanted to pull a Kemp RC, since I only remember pulling the BC Blue refractor and I wanted more memories of pulling my player. So, I was real happy when I pulled a base Chrome....and a Chrome Refractor....and then in the topper:

Could not have asked for a better box... :D

I think the last time was 1995...Leaf Limited...pulled the Thomas Lumberjack from a few packs. I've pulled a few Thomas cards I was happy to get since then, but nothing as "special" as that Lumberjack was to me...it was the only reason I opened those packs with my allowance money.

When I was young, everybody collected showdown cards. Games of Showdown was what everyone played at lunch. Anyway, one day I went down to the card store with my dad. There was a Mariano Rivera shiny in the display case that I really wanted. M dad told me to get a few packs instead. Anyway I bought 3 packs, and in the 1st pack I pulled the exact card I was going to buy, the MO shiny. Lets just say I was a happy camper.

I was trying to hit a Jeter auto in ANY box earlier this year, and I did it not once, but twice. I hit the redemption in 2008 SPX and then I pulled that 1/1 from my 2007 Exquisite case.

I guess the other time was when I was trying to hit the Ripken auto from the boxes of 2007 Fleer Ultra SE that were at my local Shopko. I got it after maybe the third box.

I have had a few boxes where I pulled a good card that I kept or liked, but only once have I pulled I card I was expecting beforehand.

2006 Fleer Ultra hobby box

About halfway through opening I said "I'm going to pull a Sammy Sosa game-used". Next pack....I did.

Nothing huge but pretty cool at the time I pulled it.

the first ever release of Playoff Prime Cuts came out and I bought a pack. The shop got in three packs. I told him that I wanted one no matter what. I was working as a Security officer/EMT at Caterpillar and my officer number was 41. I told him that i wanted the pack with the last two numbers 41. Just so happened that he got one. When I got off work I went to the shop and asked what was pulled.

The first two were aweful. Brett patch and a Fisk jersey bat. Nothing good enough to make their money back. Guys in the shop asked me why I wanted 41 and I told them cause of my officer number and Ted Williams's had hit .400 in 1941. We laughed it off. I said I should just pull Ted and get it over with.

I ripped off the plastic and I couldnt look cause it was $150 a pack. I asked my buddy if I did good and he said, " Uh.. kinda..." I was like oh shat. Wasted money.

Ted Williams Prime Cuts Timelines 1941 2 color jersey patch and bat #5/9. Sold it on ebay 8 hours later for $599.99.

Crazy.
