How reliable is BVG?

I really want a Jackie Robinson Leaf card to cherish but more importantly to pass it down to my nephew. I found one on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/1949-LEAF-JACKI...ards?hash=item20ad0e6f36&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Do you think Beckett is good for grading/authenticating vintage cards? Should I cross-grade this over to PSA or leave it in its BVG holder?

I 'm pretty sure they can spot a fake. My question is why is it not graded? It's in decent enough shape.
