How to determine Rookie cards

Since I have been away from collecting for awhile can someone help me with the difference between seeing a rookie card listed as "RC" and a rookie card listed as "(RC)" in parentheses

RC means it’s a first-year rookie card.
(RC) means it has the rookie card logo (logo started in 2006), but the player already had cards released in previous year(s).

The companies who list them in magazines and such still manage to screw it up once in a while.
