Hughes, 22, is the likely replacement for Chien-Ming ****, who was placed on the disabled list with hip weakness after Friday's game.

Hughes has been lights-out for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in three starts. He has struck out 19 and walked three in 191/3 innings and last pitched Wednesday.

Two years have passed since injuries forced the Yankees to use Hughes, then 20, as a starter. In his second major-league start, he pitched 61/3 hitless innings against Texas before straining his left hamstring. Hughes was expected to be a stable member of the rotation last year, but injuries and ineffectiveness (0-4, 6.62 ERA) prevented that.

Now Hughes is back - with more experience but perhaps fewer expectations.

"Hughesie's been throwing the ball really well," manager Joe Girardi said. "I'm excited about the reports on his starts."

****, who has a 34.50 ERA in six innings after three starts, was placed on the DL so he can work to strengthen his hips. Dr. Mark Lindsay believes the hip weakness stems from his inactivity after last June's Lisfranc ligament tear in his right foot. **** will continue to throw during his rehab, which should shorten the amount of time spent on the DL.

"He can continue to pitch while he's rehabbing," Girardi said. "This is caused by the foot injury. Stabilizing and strengthening the hip is important."

Mudcatsfan what kind of grade U think U can get with those Donruss Elite?
Because they are cut in strange way the edge and corners will be extremely difficult to get 10. PSA grader maybe better for this instance?

I wouldn't bother grading Elite die cuts because the grading companies have shown that they DO NOT GRADE THEM CONSISTENTLY.

We've seen people hammered with an 8.0 corner grade and another with what seemed to be the exact same cut getting a 9.0.

They've proven to me that when it comes to die cut, just enjoy the rareness of the card, and its visual appeal you don't need someone to tell you it's also in the top 10% of all cards that only have 25 copies in the world to begin with.

He also was an unbeatable prospect back then who had yet to show a weakness.

and i'm sure he'd have just as many fans here if he showed up.

If he pitches in NY like he can, he'll have many more fans than he ever did on the bmb :)
