Good morning. Thought this was going to be the AT (Afternoon Thread) for a while.

Good morning everyone. Been away for a couple of days. My mother lost her long fight against cancer late Monday night. No more pain, no more chemo, and she's at peace.

Morning guys, couldn't sleep well last night so I finally got up around 4am, and picked up Roy Campanella's book 'It's Good to be Alive' and just read it straight through til now. First time I ever read it, and it was an excellent read. I didn't know much about him, but wow. Branch Rickey talked to him a week before he talked to Jackie, but Roy assumed he wanted to sign him for a new ***** League team, the Black Dodgers, and Campy was already making good money on the teams he was on, so he turned him down. Never thought to ask what team Rickey wanted him for, until he was playing cards and talking to Jackie, and Jackie told him (the night before the original press conference, and sworn to secrecy) he signed with the Dodgers and was going to Montreal.
Campy also saw an 18yr old playing for the Birmingham Barons, while barnstorming after the '49 World Series, and then saw him a few more times after that and was really impressed. So he called the Dodgers (collect) and told them to get a scout down there and sign this kid. Well, the scout came, but decided the kid couldn't hit the curveball, and that's how the Dodgers missed out on signing Willie Mays.
Hope you all enjoyed those anecdotes as much as I did, and I would recommend the book to anyone who is into baseball history, or even baseball itself.
