Some people swear by Cannon, others swear by Epson, others like me swear by HP. You might be able to find a deal on a good scanner now due to the release of Windows 7 (not sure if older ones will be compatible, the way that many XP ones weren't when Vista was rolled out).

Whatever you do, make sure you get one that is CCD rather than CIS. I'm guessing that your current scanner has a CIS sensor rather than CCD, as they tend to be brutal on slabs. Here is a good link that explains the difference.http://www.scantips.com/chap3c.html

This is the only card that I have in a slab that is scanned. I typically remove cards but this is a PSA 10.

It's likely due to the raised edge of the holder. It prevents the front of the slab from resting against the glass. The sleeve inside the holder doesn't help either. PSA slabs have less of an edge on them.

I think PSA slabs tend to scan a little bit better.
