Hey Yo! I have always been more of a prospector & wax ripper, but as of late I have been getting into starting a small Vintage PC for my 2 Boys. Obviously, being a Cubs fan, I thought I would start with Banks, Williams & Santo. In the upcoming weeks and months I will start to expand I am sure. Here is a few pics/scans. I also have a few Graded Banks & Santos inbound as well.

Inbound I have a '61 Santo Rookie BVG 5 & a Banks '56 BVG 5. The should be in hand any day now. :D

The one that really stood out to me is the '59 Topps Banks. It looks like it's def a candidate for Grading IMO.

If anyone has anything that they are looking to move from these guys shoot me a PM or even any advice in buying Vintage. I'd like to discuss. Thanks for looking. Rob

You'll be hooked. Vintage is awesome.

Thanks! I was just saying that I'm hooked. I think this is more fun that Ripping Wax. I'm gonna be on the hunt for a PSA/BVG 5 Banks Rookie now. I'm not gonna go crazy with high grades, but I def need to add one of those before long.

I've always thought the 1967 Banks is a nearly perfect baseball card. Just a great image. Good job with the collection. How long until you move on to Billy and Fergie?

I have a couple Williams already, but wanna pick up a nice Rookie now. Fergie will be in the next wave for sure!

Vintage definitely is the way to go (for me, at least) in terms of acquiring seriously eye appealing cards that hold their value over time. One major piece of advice I would give is just to be patient. If you have enough patience, the card you want will come up at your price. Also, if you are buying graded vintage (which i would do for any major card), buy the card and not the grade. It might seem obvious, but tons of collectors always go for the higher grade, assuming the company has always graded it correctly. Use your own eyes and decide for yourself. It's even more true for major cards, where the difference in price for one grade can be huge, when in reality, the two grades will have very similar looking cards. If you ever need to know the certain range of card (say a Banks rookie in a PSA 5 compared to an SGC 60), just let me know and I'll get you that info. My store subscribes to VCP, which has a record of every graded vintage card sold in auction for the last 3 years or so. It's an awesome tool to make sure you are paying the right prices on an item. In any event, good luck and really have fun with it.

I appreciate the advice for sure. I am def a patient person when it comes to making purchases. It took me about a month and a half to acquire these at prices I was happy with. I will def keep in touch with you when I pick up my Banks Rookie.

I did pick up the Santo Topps Rookie BVG 5 for $10 so I couldn't complain about that one. :D

Lovin' the Banks' pickups! i still need some of his slabs for my pc, so im guessing i'll have more competion now! ;)

i need '54, '55, '58 and '69 as far as his base cards, and some subsets 1959 #559, 1960 #560, 1961 #485, #575, 1975 #196m, #196r, #197r to finish his playing days run.

Glad to see another person coming over to the vintage side. it's a run ride with lots of ups and downs.

as was mentioned already, the key is to be patient, and yes, i know thats very difficult. The slab you want
will come around eventually. Lately as the cards i need decrease, im seeing more of the ones that i searched
so long for popping up. go figure.

as for the slab grade, my opinion is, who cares really? these are old ball cards, and they have a story behind
them long before there was ever such a thing as grading.

TBP, do you prefer PSA slabs? I'm not sure what I like more yet, BVG or PSA. I have a couple that I want to get graded and I'm thinking PSA for them. Any other advice?

Rob,

great start to a gorgeous collection. I have a small stash of vintage that I'm pretty proud of. There's just nothing like the smell of old cardboard! Good luck with the Cubs PC!!

Actually, i prefer SGC slabs.
BVG are the best because eBay buyers hate them, keeping the price down.
PSA slabs are the most plentiful, and the higher grades sell for a LOT more
than they should because of the registry.
SGC i feel is an up and coming company. i like how they operate and i
really like their message boards (even though they are anything but booming)

Thanks for the insight TBP. I actually like the looks of the BVG's more as well.

Brother, anytime!

Yes, BVG slabs are the most sturdy of the three. But let me say this, if you get the chance to hold a SGC Slab
in your hands, i think you might be impressed. Both are far far far superior to PSA slab
