I had to give up the ghost of a chance of going after it when it cleared 2K yesterday. I just really hope an item like that is going into a private collection rather than to a dealer who would try to break it up.

Not all 10,000 sets are signed. They were issued unsigned by Perez-Steele, with HOFers and other baseball dignitaries receiving subscriptions for free (usually as part of their participation in the set). Otherwise, you could buy them through the Baseball HOF or direct from Perez-Steele I believe.

They may have overpaid in terms of their relative worth (as I noted in my original post), but for Ted Williams collectors with deep pockets, it may not seem so bad. If $ were no object for me, I'd have gone up against the winner, and who knows, 5K may not have been enough.
