I was thinking about this today. If a card shop was to opened up in your area would you be willing to pay a little more then ebay on wax for the convience? here are some examples of current popular products.
(average shipped ebay prices)
09 legendary cuts 80
09 bowman 45
09 bowman jumbo 70
08 bowman draft 60
09 UD series 2 70
I used these products cause they are either new or still commonly opened. So my question is to you what would you be willing to pay for these in person.

Probably a little bit, but not at the exaggerated prices that I've seen in some stores.
A little increase could justify the avoidance of paying shipping, the fear of thinking if your box has been cherry picked and most importantly the friendly environment of hanging at the store with people that enjoy our hobby.

Yes. I currently travel to my shop which the closest one is 45 minutes away. I do pay a little more for wax but I do not mind supporting my shop.

I have a shop in my area and the prices are really, really inflated. He charges 150 for 09 Bowman Jumbo and 90 for 09 Bowman Regular. Needless to say I do not get to open near as much was as I would like, but every now and then I will bust a few packs.

i ask cause i know somebody who wants to open a store and pretty much has the morjorty of the numbers worked out but its hard to calculate how much of a mark up is reasonable. would you pay 95 for legendary cuts or 60 for bowman? I also feel that if the shop has a great enviornment people wouldnt mind spending. the person is also a board member and feels that some boardies would def come in and purchase and hang out and all that good stuff.

Just depends on where the shop is. If it were in town, easily $6-$9, but if it were say, 30 miles, only about $4-$6, if that.

I am willing to pay a little more at my local shop for product. I mean I paid 90 for my bowman jumbo's But the way i look at it the Guy has fair prices its fun to talk baseball and sports in general and he calls me whenever he gets new product in. I know ebay is cheaper but I like knowing that the stuff that I am getting is coming from an unopened case that I can see cracked in person. Besides it keeps a small locally owned business open.

I mean these huge discounters are great and all but Hell if I can get a case of 07 draft for 600 versus 575 ill take that and spend some time cracking wax at the shop.

I don't mind but the biggest thing I hate is everything being $100 or more.I have walked into a few places like that and needless to say...I wasn't pleased and didn't buy a dang thing.Also...if he does open up...tell him to get some nice and worthwhile singles.I absolutely hate shops that do not have a good singles selection.Luckily the two I frequent do.And having a nice assortment of different supplies does wonders. The place close to my house has generally ok stuff but the supplies is lacking so I usually go in there once in a blue moon simply because I like to nail everything in one shot.

i agree with what you say but what would you pay for a box at a shop that lets say sells for 75-80 +shipping on ebay.

Where are you located? A 10 percent markup is a great deal 15 is ok 20 is hurting it
25 percent is just BAD Stock up on supplies thats what most people want buy these in BULK as in pack wars and stuff you will be expected to supply the protection and yes nice singles and always be willing to work a deal
I have met guys that will not budge and i will walk away nobody ever puts there
lowest price on stuff and lastly best of luck its a doggy dog world :D :D SNOOP DOGG

I used to do that alot as there used to be 3 shops within a 10 minute drive from my house. All have since closed, but when I could get a box for 90 on ebay, I'd fork up the extra 30 for the same box at the shop. No waiting at your mailbox, and you get to bust it that day.

craiger is right but remember if a box cost you (owner) $75 when the product comes out and you move them for $90-95 (which is feasible) if the product nose dives (ie 08 Bowman Chrome) remember its not gonna be easy to move those at above your cost when so many people are now able to purchase below your cost. Singles are a great idea and will always bring in some $$. Supplies are a Must and the more I visit my store the more I wish he had some big tables to bust products on! Also video the breaks encourage people to open in store and slap the videos on youtube. Its all about promotions with a shop get the name out there provide a reasonable markup and be willing to order products for your customers. The one thing i like is my shop owner will order just about anything I want and he gets it in in a timely manner.

Now I would likely go out of business,

I would try to keep wax as cheap as possible. I would use this to draw people in. I would then spend my time at the shop surfing ebay and looking for great deals on large lots of singles. I would mark the singles up 20-25%. Now this would only work if I would be able to get great deals on ebay. If you can keep steady traffic in the shop on people buying wax, you should be able to sell alot of singles. If wax prices are good enough, people would have no problem driving 45 minutes to the shop and then hopefully they will load up on singles and supplies after they break the wax.

It really depends. If I like the store and the owner isn't a dbag, then I would pay a little more, no problem. If I didn't, then I would continue buying on ebay.

Definitely not. Hobby shops are bad for the hobby. I'd buy there if their prices were lower than eBay, but that would never happen anyway.

Hmm. I'd love for you to expand on this thought. It's a rarely heard opinion and I'd like to hear why you think they're bad for the hobby. (I'm not being sarcastic or mocking you in any way)

Wasn't there a post about how Topps was changing the way they were distributing boxes/cases so places like Blowout or Dave and Adams wouldn't be able to offer low prices online? I could be wrong though...
