Yikes. I collect this set because it's dirt cheap for 19th century stuff, but I don't think I'll be displaying this one

Adolf stole his design from native Americans I think (or was it that card that gave him the idea?)

The swastika has been around for a thousand years and had nothing to do with anything negative. It was a sign of good luck.

The Indian swastika was facing the other way and the Nazis turned it the other way around 1920 and made it well known. Before then, DAP and NSDAP faced the swastika either way. This "backwards" swastika was also used before the Nazis.

In High school I tried to tell some gangsters that who had the Indian swastika crossed out on their shirt and well... I ended up fighting both in the drive thru. Ahh to be young.

Maybe before WWII, but if you walk around in tons of swastika clothing for good luck nowadays people aren't going to like you very much.

There are actually still some Victorian era homes in Chicago (and I presume elsewhere) that still use the original
swastika in the brickwork decorating the outside of the home.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but don't you have a stylized swastika tattoo on your arm?

The Oldest Known Symbol

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika was used by many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well known, if not commonly used, symbol but was called by many different names:

* China - wan
* England - fylfot
* Germany - Hakenkreuz
* Greece - tetraskelion and gammadion
* India - swastika

Though it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans also have long used the symbol of the swastika.

The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II.

There's a house here that up until 5 years ago had it in the design in part of their side wall. As a kid, I used to stare in shock when we drove past it. There's still a small portion left. I was just thinking about that before I read your post. I always thought it was intentional as that house is on the border of what used to be a all white community.

I have flames on one arm and a longhorn steer/Texas design thing on my other sleeve.

I sure as hell don't have anything resembling a swastika anywhere on my body. I'm not exactly a fan of neo **** skinhead **********

Well, then I'm clearly not remembering correctly because I thought for certain you had a stylized swastika tattoo on one of your upper inside arms from when you posted in a one of the photo threads.

Perhaps it wasn't a swastika...but could easily be construed as such.
