One simply can't overlook the fact that a big part of Pujols' mystique is as a Cardinal.

Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, Mickey Mantle, George Brett, Don Mattingly, Kirby Puckett, Robin Yount, etc etc etc have increased popularity simply because they stayed with a single team, this is reflected in the value of *all* their cards, not just their rookie cards.

Does the market command a premium for Frank Thomas cards where he's pictured as a Blue Jay or an Athletic? Griffey on the White Sox? Of course not.

I bet guys like Carlton Fisk would've been more popular in the hobby if they had remained with their original team. Simply put, the right team matters a lot.

I agree that if a star type player keeps with the same team for a career, it usually equates to a best case scenerio for admiration and collectability, however I believe Pujols' ''once in a generational'' type talent may verywell transcend such limitations usually reserved for mere star type players. Would there be a benefit for staying on the Cardinals with regards to card value? Perhaps, but I do not think there will be any kind of substantial decline if and when he leaves. Infact, if he were to go to, lets say, the Yankees and put up MVP like numbers for a few years, we may even see a considerable increase of the likes one would not see even if he stayed with his home team.

Different sport/player and I understand the backlash, but look at LeBron James. His autos sold $180-$250+ almost no matter what it was while with Cavs. Now they are down across the board. Could happen to Pujols. Even if he, gulp, became a Cub, I doubt Cub fans would want his cards in the dreaded Cardinals uni.

LeBron's cards aren't down because he left Cleveland. They're down because the manner in which he left Cleveland caused the public to turn against him which led to his cards dropping.

One of the actual suitors for him could probably hurt the values pretty significantly.

They have a brand new stadium opening this year.

They want a superstar name to bring fans in (many of whom are hispanic).

They have pledged to make a significant splash in FA this year.

You know who i'm talking about,,,,,,,

The Florida Marlins.

BOOM

Just reported - he'll be meeting with the Marlins, perhaps as early as tomorrow.

The Marlins are "courting" every big name FA. It is likely mostly just to show fans that they're trying.

If a guy is willing to take less $ than other teams are offering, sure, Miami might get one of them. But even with a new stadium they're not competing financially for Pujols.

Well a guy name Michael Jordan play for the Wizards & was never great again. His legacy was tainted yet his card collectors still buy them like gold. So I don't buy the 1 team thing

No baseball player today has a tenth of the fan base of Jordan.
