Wonderful.

By the way, screw Loria. And Selig for letting Loria kill baseball in Montreal.

forgive my ignorance, but how did he know this was his last hit? was it the last game of the season? wikipedia isn't shedding any light on this situation.

great video though. really sad what happened to him.

Thanks so much for sharing. Tears in my eyes. He was such a beast competitor-'twas great to meet him (and the Hawk) at Nats park.

It was game 156 of the 1992 season, and the last game of the season in Montreal. Gary Carter wasn't playing too much at the end of the season, appearing in only 4 of their last 19 games, and this would be his last game as well, sitting out the last 6 games on the road (3 in STL, 3 in CHI).

It was the 7th inning of a scoreless game, and the stadium knew that this was Carter's last at bat and that he was going to be pulled from the game. His RBI double in the video above would prove to be the only run in the Expos' win.

Was the atmosphere ever as electric as it was that day at Olympic Stadium? I can't say I've seen many Expos games, but from my memory, it was usually empty. The place is going bonkers in this video. Incredible.

Terrific vid, and thanks for the recap on the significance of it. Makes it all the better to enjoy watching the moment.

You know, I remember a lot of little things about baseball. I remember stuff like the year Lloyd Moseby was born (1959) and I remember who gave up Pete Rose's 4,191st hit (Reggie Patterson). But for the life of me, I did not recall that Gary Carter ended his career back with the Expos. And I have absolutely no recollection of that video clip. Thanks for sharing!

It was great that he returned to Montreal to finish out his career. In looking through his career stats and bio, it was neat to see that when he made his MLB debut I was 3 days old! I'll always remember him as an Expo. His name was so ingrained in this Canadian baseball fan's childhood memories that I remember when the Jays traded for Alomar and Carter in 1990, it seemed so strange to be saying "Joe" Carter instead of "Gary" Carter. Funny the things you remember from your childhood.
