Pre-story:

A year or so ago I was in a local card shop and saw the guy had this card:

IMG_0061.jpg

I had never seen it before and asked the guy what he wanted for it...he said he thought it booked around $15 so I could have it for $7...Took it home and checked out the OPG, found out that it was SP'd to 4, and that's why I hadn't seen it.

Fast forward to last week some time when this card got listed:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0471494887

It's short printed /4 as well, but the seller didn't know what he had, so I figured I'd be able to scoop it up for a fairly low price...Wrong, guess set collectors knew what he had.

Anyway, knowing that I couldn't have it made me not really want the one I had any more, so I listed it. 15 minutes into the auction I get an offer from the guy that won the other one...I didn't accept right away in hopes that the runner up from the other auction might hit the BIN...Shortly thereafter the runner up offers $30...I immediately countered $45 saying that if he wanted to actually win this time he'd need to cough up (in a less ******** manner, of course). He accepted the offer, and now I'm $45 richer.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... WO:US:1123

Long read, but the moral of the story is that set collectors are crazy. Even with the short print, I didn't see this being worth any more than $15.

Nice sale, but I really can't understand the logic in selling yours when you couldn't win another.

Regardless, nice profit...one man's $1 junk is another man's treasure.

The real moral of the story is don't let other sellers kill the value of your card!

If the first seller had listed it correctly and as a print run of 4 it would of sold for a lot more and you would
of been taking offers in the 100-125 range instead of the 45 dollar range, which is what like 6 or 7 packs
worth of money?

Glad you are happy

We're talking about Victor Martinez here. His cards (regardless of print run) don't sell that high.

Both buyers knew that the card was short printed and bid accordingly. It wouldn't have mattered whether or not the seller would have noted the listing as such, I promise.

I'm curious if V-Mart saw any increase in prices of his stuff after getting moved to Boston. As a collector of an Indians player, I've accumulated some of his stuff from bulk purchases, though nothing really special that I recall.

That day prices saw a slight increase, but to be honest they're really at an all time low.

An 01 Elite RC/410 just sold for $22...When he had his 20+ game hitting streak a couple years ago these bad boys were at $400+.

Though it is none of my business, why didn't you offer the card to the first person for $45?

If I made a counter offer his $40 offer would have been nullified...I was going to wait a day to see if the other guy would bite, and if he didn't, take the $40 offer.

Zach,

I dont understand the logic here?

You sell a PC item for what yourself said is only a $30 profit. ( when you said it would sell for around $15)

Since only 4 exist and clearly another person wants one, im guessing your not going to try and aquire one in the future?

Gotcha. I thought this was outside of ebay.

Maybe he needed the cash. Other things come up in life besides baseball cards.

I didn't need the cash...I'm trying to slowly get out of cards, although I haven't made any headway yet.

I figured since my plans are to sell mostly everything anyway, then now was as good a time as any given the other sale.

Thank you, I wasnt aware of that.

I was simply asking why he sold it, in a sense, like Gilmore stated. Maybe he was trimming his collection or maybe he had lost interest.

In that case, great sale!

I sold my first card in a year on Friday, a 1999 Co-signers Glaus/Grieve dual auto. Ive only seen 2 in my 9 years of collecting. ( I bought both ) I picked it up with a BIN of $40 and sold it for a BIN $99.99.

I was wondering if that was you! I never knew those were so rare. Great sale!

Hi Zach- Are you looking to start moving any of your Vizquel stuff? If so, I'd obviously be interested!

They're two different cards though, one he's pictured hitting and the other he's in his gear. They maybe be different print runs as well, nice sale!

Wow I had no idea you were selling your stuff. I was thinking it'd go for much more than $45 though, maybe a hundo or so? You of anyone would know though
