It finally caught up to me, this addiction of our hobby. I was unfortunately one that was unable to control myself when it came to buying cards online and the LCS. I usually bought about the same amount that I pulled in per month. However I was trying to slash back over the last half year by selling more of my collection to get some reserves back. It wasn't until my wife and I were in the process of refinancing that I got hit on the credit balance on my main charge card which had my property tax and my mother in laws still on there. I just caught hell from the wife and I'll probably be lucky if I don't get a divorce. So long story short, in two months, I'll be out of credit card debt but will most likely be out of the hobby for a long period of time. I swear, this was an addiction for me and I can only hope that my marriage will last. thanks

Ouch, sorry to hear man. You have an amazing collection, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. Best of luck in the coming months to you and your family.

yep money sucks. i switched to full sized game used items but realized i couldnt afford that hobby. So back to cards i came.

Just try and stay positive. As hard as things may be now. They will get better. Do what you need to do, handle your business, and everything will work out over time. Goodluck man

Good luck, man.

Just remember, the cards will always be there, but your family may not. Take a few years off, and get back into it later on. You can always hunt down those things you used to have or always wanted later on down the line.

Imagine how cool it would be to go in a time machine several years in the future. Imagine all the exploring you can do of all the releases that you missed, and how fun it would be to get back into things, kind of like starting afresh.

Good luck with everything. Buying can be very addicting. In the years since i have returned to the hobby (2002), i have learned to treat this hobby like a marathon and not a race. When i first returned to the hobby in 2002/03 i spent about $60K in a little over 6 months, i knew i couldn't keep that pace up and have since slowed way down. Like i said i now treat this hobby like a marathon instead of a race.

Easy to say when you can reap the profits of an adverb shop on a regular basis.

Been there, done that. Nearly cost me my marriage. If I'd have worked my bankroll correctly I'd be up huge right now. Instead I busted any and everything.

I don't see what is tough about it. You either have the choice of buying cards and putting yourself more in debt or losing your wife. Seems like to me the choice would be an easy one to make ;)

It sucks doesn't it.

I always had more control then many here. If I pulled in 4-5k a month, I dropped like 2-4 hundo a month, and I think that is too much personally. Since I've been out of work, I've spent 110.00 in the last 8 months, and sold off just over 3k of my collection. Definitely helps with expenses, but I've been really strugling with bills and putting food on the table. Either way, it sucks when you come to a crossroads.

I wish you the best of luck, and hopefully this "hope my marriage stays in tact" thing is more joke then reality.

You need to tell her everything. No lies. It'll piss her off but it is the best chance you have of saving a marriage that is falling apart over bad decisions.

That said, you should probably not quit entirely lest you develop resentment towards her for making you stop. Just find a cheaper way to stay happy in the hobby. Sometimes the hunt is where the joy lies. I spend about $15 a month and have a pretty impressive collection (or so I'd like to think). I bargain hunt like a champ. I just picked up an autograph for $10 that I've only seen twice ever. When that package gets here, it will be just as amazing as if I opened a pack and got a 1/1.

But I digress. Avoid extremes and be honest. When you start hiding stuff, you're doing something wrong.

well put.
i think this experience has opened your eyes and now you really want to make an effort. this can be a good thing for you both. like therion mentioned, the resentment and unhappiness wil set in if you just stop. it's all in moderation. and that in itself can also hinder things as well. sometimes when we do that scaling back, we often times make exceptions moreso than we should. maybe we fall back into our old ways. we start to make excuses for this purchase or that purchase trying to justify them. you both have the right to be happy in life. best of luck with this, i wish you both well.
