Impact of releasing BC and TC so close in time

I know that people have mentioned how closely Bowman Chrome and Topps Chrome were released. Now that a few days have passed I've been trying to get a feel for what the impact might be. My first thought was that it could mean that Topps Chrome cards may be getting less attention than they otherwise might and may be a little on the cheap side. I've also noticed that at least for some players there are far more low-numbered Topps Chrome parallels than Bowman Chrome. Not sure if that is because Topps Chrome has so many low numbered parallels or because it is being ripped (or listed) more frequently.

Anyone notice anything?

Topps Chrome is always cheap but almost arguably appeals to more collectors than Bowman Chrome.

I don't get how Topps Chrome is SOOOOO good in Football but sooooo blah (to me) in the baseball market. I honestly can't wait for Topps Chrome Football this year and I hardly notice when Topps Chrome Baseball comes out.

I would say it is because in football, a rookie cards is pretty much a true "rookie". In baseball, a player normally has a crapload of prospect cards way before he has an official "rookie" card. By the time his rookie card comes out, not as many people care. Everybody wants the actual first card.

I think that if someone whats to break a box of Chrome they would look at the number of autographs in the box and that's why Topps Chrome is so popular compared to Bowman Chrome

Every third box of Bowman Chrome has two autographs...but yes, agreed.

My favorite example of this: Josh Hamilton

Had first true professional card in 1999 topps traded. Auto Approx value = $150-$250

Didn't have a "true" RC until 2007. Auto Approx value = $20-$30

The release of Topps Chrome so close to Bowman Chrome had an impact on sales. There are less buyers of each player because their is a greater selection of player autographs out there to chase. I think that Topps Finest being released so close to Topps Chrome has had a much greater impact since the autograph selection is very similar. At least Bowman Chrome offers different prospects to chase.

Agreed 100%! I miss the days when you had to wait for a traded set or the next year issue to get a players first card depicting them as a major leaguer.

This and the fact that Topps Chrome Baseball comes at the end of the season whereas the football release is at the start of the season where everyone is all jazzed up.

Those days were awesome.
The 1986 Update sets were incredible because they had the first cards of hot MLB rookies like Joyner, Sierra, Clark, Bo, Incaviglia, etc... guys who everyone knew about.
It was such a cool feeling as a kid anticipating the first cards of MLB players you watch on TV.

Or opening packs and pulling a Mattingly rookie in 1984, during the season he became a star and won the batting title.
Or a Strawberry rookie in 1984, which came out after he won Rookie of the Year.
Same with Gooden in 1985.
It was such a cooler feeling pulling the first cards of players, after months of anticipation, getting rookies of actual stars.
